


{"id":21719,"date":"2024-03-21T09:58:18","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T04:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21719"},"modified":"2025-10-13T14:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T09:10:11","slug":"brucethoa-isro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/brucethoa-isro\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Brucethoa ISRO?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Brucethoa ISRO<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0new species of\u00a0deep-sea isopod discovered off the Kollam coast,\u00a0Kerala.<\/li>\n<li>The tiny\u00a0fish-parasitic crustacean, belonging to the genus Brucethoa, was\u00a0recovered\u00a0from the base of the\u00a0gill cavity of the Spinyjaw greeneye, a marine fish.<\/li>\n<li>It is the\u00a0second species\u00a0within\u00a0this genus to be\u00a0documented in India.<\/li>\n<li>It has been named Brucethoa\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/isro\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>ISRO<\/u><\/a> in honour of the Indian space agency\u2019s successful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indian-space-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>space missions<\/u><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Females of the species tend to be larger than males. Females grow to about 19 mm in length and 6 mm in width, while males are smaller at around half the size.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Isopods?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Isopods are an order of\u00a0invertebrates (animals without backbones) that\u00a0belong to the greater\u00a0crustacean group of animals, which includes crabs and shrimp.<\/li>\n<li>Scientists estimate that there are around\u00a010,000 species of isopods (all belonging to the order \u201cIsopoda\u201d).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They also live in many\u00a0different types of habitats, from mountains and deserts to the deep sea, and they are\u00a0distributed worldwide.<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>They are one of the most\u00a0morphologically diverse\u00a0of all the crustacean groups, coming in many\u00a0different shapes and sizes and ranging from micrometers to a half-meter in length.<\/li>\n<li>Isopods often\u00a0do not look alike, but they\u00a0do have common features. For example, all isopods have\u00a0two pairs of antennae,\u00a0compound eyes, and\u00a0four sets of jaws.<\/li>\n<li>The body of all isopods\u00a0consists of seven segments, each with its\u00a0own pair of walking legs.<\/li>\n<li>Isopods have a\u00a0short abdominal section composed of\u00a0six segments,\u00a0called \u201cpleons,\u201d and\u00a0one or more of these segments is\u00a0fused into a tail section.<\/li>\n<li>About half\u00a0of the\u00a0known species of isopods\u00a0live in the ocean. Others live in coastal and shelf waters, moving around on the seafloor or living in plants.<\/li>\n<li>Most are free-living, but\u00a0a number of marine species are parasitic on other animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are crustaceans?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Crustaceans (make up a very large group of the Arthropods which include the crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill, barnacles, brine shrimp, copepods, ostracods and mantis shrimp. They are invertebrates with a hard exoskeleton (carapace), a segmented body that is bilaterally symmetrical, more than four pairs of jointed appendages.
