{"id":21763,"date":"2024-03-22T04:37:09","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T23:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21763"},"modified":"2025-04-06T15:10:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T09:40:44","slug":"snowpacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/snowpacks\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Snowpacks?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Snowpacks<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In\u00a0mountainous areas that experience a winter season, precipitation can fall in the form of snow.<\/li>\n<li>Snow that has fallen on the ground\u00a0and does not melt for months due to below-freezing temperatures is\u00a0called a snowpack.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Snowpacks can\u00a0consist of multiple layers of snow, each one from a different snowfall, that become\u00a0compacted under the\u00a0weight of the subsequent layers that lie on top.<\/li>\n<li>The snowpack remains on the ground until the arrival of above-freezing temperatures in the spring, which\u00a0causes it to start to melt.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0water from the\u00a0melting snowpack is called snowmelt.\n<ul>\n<li>It is an important\u00a0water source that keeps streams flowing in the warmer months.<\/li>\n<li>It is also an important water source for humans,\u00a0replenishing reservoirs.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0depth of the snowpack\u00a0is influenced\u00a0not only by the amount of snowfall but\u00a0also by temperature and wind.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Strong winds can\u00a0evaporate snow cover, eroding the top layers of the snowpack, while an\u00a0increase in temperature can cause layers to melt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In areas with an abundance of snow and proper conditions, the snowpack can accumulate to a depth of three meters (10 feet) or more.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0density of a snowpack\u2014how closely packed the snow particles are\u2014increases as more layers accumulate, pushing down on the layers below.<\/li>\n<li>Weak layers, such as snow-covered surface hoar, can\u00a0increase the risk of avalanches.<\/li>\n<li>Snowpack data is valuable for monitoring the effects of climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is an avalanche?<\/h3>\n<p>An avalanche is a mass of material moving rapidly down a slope. An avalanche is typically triggered when material on a slope breaks loose from its surroundings; this material then quickly collects and carries additional material down the slope.
