


{"id":21837,"date":"2024-03-24T05:21:12","date_gmt":"2024-03-23T23:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21837"},"modified":"2025-04-06T15:40:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T10:10:37","slug":"right-whales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/right-whales\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Right Whales?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Right Whales<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Right whale, (family Balaenidae) is any\u00a0of four species of stout-bodied whales having an\u00a0enormous head measuring one-quarter to\u00a0one-third their total body length.<\/li>\n<li>While they\u00a0differ genetically, and in conservation status, they\u00a0do not differ significantly in their external appearance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>From the 17th to 19th century, these whales\u00a0were hunted for their oil and\u00a0their strong,\u00a0elastic baleen.<\/li>\n<li>Because of the\u00a0considerable economic value of these products,\u00a0this\u00a0cetacean gained its name because it was the \u201cright whale\u201d to take.<\/li>\n<li>Adult right whales are generally between 45 and 52 feet in length and can weigh up to 70 tons.<\/li>\n<li>When feeding, these whales swim slowly and\u00a0use baleen to eat schools of small, shrimp-like crustaceans, called\u00a0zooplankton.<\/li>\n<li>Conservation Status:\n<ul>\n<li>Right whales were\u00a0nearly exterminated by uncontrolled hunting, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)\u00a0considers two\u00a0of the four\u00a0species as endangered. They have been\u00a0completely protected by international agreement since 1946.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Whereas at least 10,000 bowheads and approximately 13,000 southern right whales remain,\u00a0northern right whales are rare,\u00a0with North Atlantic right whales numbering only in the hundreds and North Pacific right whales numbering only slightly more.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0IUCN classifies the North Pacific right whale as an endangered species and the North Atlantic right whale as a critically endangered species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is zooplankton?<\/h3>\n<p>Zooplankton are small, aquatic microorganisms in the water column that include crustaceans, rotifers, open water insect larvae and aquatic mites.
