


{"id":21868,"date":"2024-03-26T11:27:39","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T05:57:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21868"},"modified":"2025-04-06T15:52:43","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T10:22:43","slug":"smart-meter-national-programme-smnp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/smart-meter-national-programme-smnp\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is a Smart Meter?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A smart meter is used\u00a0for recording the consumption of electricity, but it\u00a0also measures voltage levels.<\/li>\n<li>While traditional meters measure the power consumption of a home or business, smart meters live up to their name and\u00a0transmit the same information every 15 minutes or hourly\u00a0to utility providers.<\/li>\n<li>Since they are\u00a0connected to the internet, smart meters can\u00a0communicate information to the consumer about usage\u00a0and also to the utility provider\u00a0for monitoring\u00a0purposes and\u00a0accurate billing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an initiative by the government of India to promote the use of smart meters across the country.<\/li>\n<li>The aim of the SMNP is to improve the billing and collection efficiencies of distribution companies (DISCOMs) operating in the country.<\/li>\n<li>SMNP aims to\u00a0replace 25 crore conventional meters with smart meters in India.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme is being\u00a0implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).\n<ul>\n<li>EESL is a\u00a0joint venture of\u00a0four National Public Sector Enterprises: NTPC Limited, PFC, REC, and POWERGRID, and was set up\u00a0under the Ministry of Power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This roll-out is\u00a0under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, wherein\u00a0EESL\u00a0will\u00a0undertake all the\u00a0capital and operational expenditure with\u00a0zero upfront investment from states and utilities.<\/li>\n<li>EESL\u00a0recovers the cost of these meters\u00a0through the monetization of energy savings, resulting from enhanced billing accuracy, avoided meter reading costs, and other efficiencies.<\/li>\n<li>The smart meters are\u00a0installed as per guidelines issued by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).<\/li>\n<li>Benefits associated with smart meters:\n<ul>\n<li>For consumers, smart meters can help\u00a0save on electricity bills by allowing them to track their consumption and make decisions accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>For utilities, smart meters can\u00a0improve operational efficiency and help in\u00a0managing power demand.<\/li>\n<li>Smart meters are\u00a0connected through a web-based monitoring system, which will\u00a0help reduce commercial losses of utilities,\u00a0enhance revenues, and serve as an important tool in power sector reforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)?<\/h3>\n<p>EESL is promoted by the Ministry of Power, Government of India, as a Joint Venture of four reputed public-sector undertakings NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation Limited, REC Limited and POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited. It is registered under the Companies Act, 1956 on 10th December 2009. EESL was formed to create and sustain market access to energy efficient technologies, particularly in public facilities like municipalities, buildings, agriculture, industry etc. and to implement several schemes of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power and Ministry of New &amp; Renewable Energy, Government of India.
