{"id":21918,"date":"2024-03-28T07:40:10","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T02:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21918"},"modified":"2025-04-06T16:13:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T10:43:37","slug":"solar-and-heliospheric-observatory-soho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/solar-and-heliospheric-observatory-soho\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a project of international collaboration between the\u00a0European Space Agency (ESA)\u00a0and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration\u00a0(NASA).<\/li>\n<li>Launched in December 1995, SOHO was designed to\u00a0study the Sun.<\/li>\n<li>In order to provide continuous observations, it was\u00a0maneuvered to orbit the\u00a0first Lagrangian point (L1), a point some 1.5 million km (900,000 miles) from Earth toward the Sun where the\u00a0gravitational attraction of Earth\u00a0and\u00a0the Sun,\u00a0combine in such a way that a small\u00a0body remains approximately at rest relative to both.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It carries 12 scientific instruments to study the solar atmosphere, helioseismology, and the solar wind.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Information from the mission has allowed scientists to learn more about the Sun\u2019s internal structure and dynamics, the chromosphere, the corona, and solar particles.<\/li>\n<li>Though its mission was\u00a0scheduled to run until only 1998, it has\u00a0continued collecting\u00a0data, adding to scientists&#8217; understanding of our closest star, and making many\u00a0new discoveries,\u00a0including thousands of\u00a0comets.<\/li>\n<li>SOHO is the\u00a0longest-lived Sun-watching satellite to date.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Comet?<\/h3>\n<p>Comets are defined as icy bodies of frozen gases, rocks and dust left over from the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.
