{"id":21922,"date":"2024-03-28T11:37:47","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T06:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21922"},"modified":"2025-04-06T16:15:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T10:45:09","slug":"afanasy-nikitin-seamount","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/afanasy-nikitin-seamount\/","title":{"rendered":"Afanasy Nikitin Seamount"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Afanasy Nikitin Seamount<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The AN Seamount is a\u00a0structural feature (400 km-long and 150 km-wide)\u00a0in the Central Indian Basin, located about 3,000 km away from India\u2019s coast.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0comprises a main plateau, rising\u00a01200 m above the\u00a0surrounding ocean floor (4800m), and secondary elevated seamount highs.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0rich in deposits of\u00a0cobalt, nickel, manganese, and copper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is a Seamount?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an\u00a0underwater mountain formed through\u00a0volcanic activity.<\/li>\n<li>These are recognised as\u00a0hotspots for marine life.<\/li>\n<li>Like volcanoes on land, seamounts\u00a0can be active,\u00a0extinct,\u00a0or dormant\u00a0volcanoes.<\/li>\n<li>These are\u00a0formed near mid-ocean ridges, where the earth\u2019s tectonic plates are moving apart,\u00a0allowing molten rock to rise to the seafloor.<\/li>\n<li>The planet\u2019s two most-studied mid-ocean ridges are the\u00a0Mid-Atlantic Ridge\u00a0and the\u00a0East Pacific Rise.<\/li>\n<li>Some seamounts have also been\u00a0found near intraplate hotspots\u2014regions of heavy volcanic activity within a plate\u2014and oceanic island chains with volcanic and seismic activity called island arcs.<\/li>\n<li>Significance of seamounts:\n<ul>\n<li>They provide\u00a0information about the mantle\u2019s composition and how\u00a0tectonic plates evolve.<\/li>\n<li>These are helpful in understanding\u00a0their influence on\u00a0how water circulates and\u00a0absorbs heat and carbon dioxide.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0good places for life because they can\u00a0cause localised ocean upwelling, the process by which nutrient-rich water from deep within the ocean moves up to the surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the International Seabed Authority (ISBA)?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an international organization established in 1994 to regulate mining and related activities in the international seabed beyond national jurisdiction, an area that includes most of the world\u2019s oceans. The ISA came into existence upon the entry into force of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which codified international law regarding territorial waters, sea lanes, and ocean resources.
