{"id":21935,"date":"2024-03-28T12:53:30","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T07:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21935"},"modified":"2025-04-06T16:19:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T10:49:56","slug":"investment-facilitation-for-development-ifd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/investment-facilitation-for-development-ifd\/","title":{"rendered":"Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Investment Facilitation for Development<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a joint Initiative launched at the 11th\u00a0WTO Ministerial Conference (MC11) in December 2017 on a plurilateral basis by 70 countries.<\/li>\n<li>This was done through a process known as the\u00a0Joint Statement Initiative.<\/li>\n<li>Aim: This agreement aims to create\u00a0legally binding provisions to facilitate\u00a0investment flows.<\/li>\n<li>It also aims to develop predictable, transparent and open investment rules that will contribute to more efficient investment flows and increased business confidence and it is now in a formal negotiation phase.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Objective: A core objective of the framework is to facilitate greater participation by developing and least-developed WTO Members in global investment flows.<\/li>\n<li>The IFD agreement was finalised in November 2023 and at present around 120 of 166 WTO member countries (more than 70% of the membership) back this agreement.<\/li>\n<li>Key areas included in the IFD Agreement to promote and facilitate investment\n<ul>\n<li>Improving regulatory transparency and predictability: such as publishing investment-related measures and establishing enquiry points;<\/li>\n<li>Streamlining and speeding up administrative\u00a0procedures: such as removing duplicative steps in approval processes and simplifying applications;<\/li>\n<li>Enhancing international cooperation and addressing the needs of developing members \u2013 such as providing technical assistance and capacity-building for developing countries and least developed countries; and<\/li>\n<li>Other issues: such as implementing provisions to encourage responsible business conduct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>India is not a part of this initiative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the World Trade Organisation (WTO)?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an international organization that promotes and regulates global trade among nations. The WTO was established on January 1, 1995 by replacing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
