In Garo Hills, males call rigorously in the morning and evening, while in Ri-Bhoi, calls are heard during daylight hours.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0basal one-third of the hind wing is rich saffron, and the apical two-thirds are matte black with\u00a0prominent rich saffron squarish spots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Cicadas?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Cicada, (family Cicadidae) is any of a group of\u00a0sound-producing insects.<\/li>\n<li>They have\u00a0two pairs of membranous wings, prominent\u00a0compound eyes, and\u00a0three simple eyes (ocelli).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-cicada\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Cicadas<\/u><\/a> are\u00a0medium to large in size, ranging from 2 to 5 cm (0.8 to 2 inches).<\/li>\n<li>Male cicadas produce loud noises\u00a0by vibrating membranes\u00a0(tymbals) near the base of the abdomen.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Female cicadas usually\u00a0lay their eggs in woody plant tissues that drop from the plant when, or shortly after, the eggs hatch.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>More than\u00a03,000 species of cicadas are known.\u00a0Most of them are tropical and occur in\u00a0deserts, grasslands, and forests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Garo Hills?<\/h3>\n<p>The eastern part of Meghalaya is known as the Garo Hills. The hilly tracts of Meghalaya are known as the Shillong Plateau and are divided into three parts, the Jaintia hills on the east, the Khasi hills in the centre and the Garo Hills on the western part of the state. The area is named after the local Garo people. The Garo hills cover an area of about 8000 square kilometres.
