


{"id":21979,"date":"2024-03-30T02:47:24","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T21:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21979"},"modified":"2025-10-10T13:24:31","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T07:54:31","slug":"group-of-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/group-of-friends\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Group of Friends\u2019 to Promote Accountability for Crimes Against Peacekeepers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About \u2018Group of Friends\u2019 to Promote Accountability for Crimes Against Peacekeepers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It will seek to facilitate the promotion of\u00a0accountability for all acts of\u00a0violence against United Nations (UN) peacekeepers and\u00a0seek facilitation of capacity building and technical assistance to the host state authorities.<\/li>\n<li>It was launched in 2022.<\/li>\n<li>It comprises of\u00a040 member states.\u00a0India, Bangladesh, Egypt, France, Morocco, and Nepal are co-chairs.<\/li>\n<li>It will actively engage and\u00a0share information\u00a0with the UN Secretary-General and\u00a0assist the member states hosting or those who have hosted peacekeeping operations,\u00a0in bringing to justice the perpetrators of such acts; serve as an informal platform at the UN to exchange information,\u00a0share best practices, and mobilize resources directed at facilitating accountability for crimes committed against peacekeepers; and monitor progress on bringing accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.<\/li>\n<li>It will\u00a0convene two meetings of its members\u00a0per year, organise and host one event per year involving Permanent Missions and other stakeholders, to take the plan forward, thereby ensuring greater safety and security for peacekeepers.<\/li>\n<li>Group of Friends\u00a0represents the &#8220;political will&#8221; of member states, particularly of the troop and police contributing countries,\u00a0to champion the implementation of the provisions of U.N. Security Council\u00a0resolution 2589, which was\u00a0adopted in August 2021 under India\u2019s Presidency of the Council.\n<ul>\n<li>Resolution 2589 had\u00a0called upon member states, hosting or having hosted UN\u00a0peacekeeping operations, to\u00a0take all appropriate measures to\u00a0bring to justice perpetrators of the killing of, and all\u00a0acts of violence against UN personnel,\u00a0including, but not limited to, their\u00a0detention and abduction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>India and UN Peacekeeping<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India is the\u00a0largest cumulative contributor of peacekeepers to the UN, having deployed more than\u00a02,60,000 peacekeepers over the last seven decades.<\/li>\n<li>India has lost 177 of its peacekeepers in the line of duty, the largest by far from any troop-contributing country.<\/li>\n<li>With more than 6000 peacekeepers deployed in nine out of twelve peacekeeping missions, India is a strong proponent of accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)?<\/h3>\n<p>The United Nations Charter established six main organs of the United Nations, including the\u00a0<u>UN Security Council (UNSC)<\/u>. UNSC has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions.
