


{"id":22031,"date":"2024-10-04T04:20:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T22:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22031"},"modified":"2025-10-10T12:01:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T06:31:11","slug":"vaikom-satyagraha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vaikom-satyagraha\/","title":{"rendered":"Vaikom Satyagraha"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Vaikom Satyagraha:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was a <strong>social reform movement<\/strong> which originated and took its place at <strong>Vaikom<\/strong>, then part of the <strong>princely state of Travancore<\/strong>, in Kottayam district of <strong>Kerala,<\/strong> during the period of <strong>1924-1925.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was the <strong>dawn of temple entry movements<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Background:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Vaikom Mahadevar Temple<\/strong> was the epicenter of the town, and <strong>Dalits wereprohibitedfrom entering<\/strong> the temple premises or <strong>even using the road<\/strong> that encircled the temple.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>AICC<\/strong> (All India Congress Committee) <strong>meeting in Kakinada in 1923<\/strong>, <strong>T. K Madhavan,<\/strong> along with <strong>Sardar Panikkar<\/strong> and <strong>KP Kesava<\/strong> Menon, submitted a <strong>petition to <\/strong>the <strong>Travancore legislative council.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The petition <strong>sought to grant<\/strong> the <strong>right to temple entry<\/strong> and worship of gods for all sections of the society, irrespective of caste, creed, and community.<\/li>\n<li>During a tour of the region by leaders like <strong>K. Kelappan<\/strong>, a <strong>demandwas made<\/strong> to allow everyone to use the road, but the <strong>temple authorities refused<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This refusal led to the commencement of Satyagraha<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Satyagraha was led by <strong>prominent leaders<\/strong> such as <strong>K. Kelappan, T. K. Madhavan,<\/strong> and <strong>K. P. Kesava Menon<\/strong>, among others.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Young volunteers<\/strong> from all over Kerala joined the Satyagraha to fight against untouchability.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A lot of prominent political and social personalities, including <strong>Mahatma Gandhi<\/strong>, had a role in the satyagraha.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/mahatma-gandhi-movements\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mahatma Gandhi<\/strong><\/a> supported the movement unconditionally and <strong>visited Vaikom in 1925.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Periyar E.V. Ramasamy<\/strong> arrived in Vaikom on April 13, 1924, after several of the movement\u2019s leaders were jailed, and he provided crucial leadership to it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sree Narayana Guru<\/strong> also extended his support and co-operation to the Vaikom Satyagraha.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Despite the authorities&#8217; attempts to suppress the Satyagraha, it <strong>ultimately succeeded in opening the temple roads to everyone.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Satyagraha came to a close<\/strong> on November 23, <strong>1925<\/strong>, a total of 604 days after it began in March, 1924.<\/li>\n<li>In another three years, the Travancore government would order that temple roads across the state be opened to all.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: Who was Periyar E.V.
