T. tomentosa)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other names:<\/strong>\u00a0Asna; saj or saaj; Indian laurel;\u00a0<strong>marutham<\/strong>\u00a0(Tamil);\u00a0<strong>matti\u00a0<\/strong>(Kannada); ain (Marathi); taukkyan (Burma); asana (Sri Lanka); and casually\u00a0<strong>crocodile bark<\/strong>\u00a0because of the characteristic bark pattern.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong>\u00a0It is mainly found in both\u00a0<strong>dry and moist deciduous forests<\/strong>\u00a0in southern India up to 1000 m.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong>\u00a0It is principally native to southern and Southeast Asia in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Application:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The wood of this tree is\u00a0<strong>used for furniture,<\/strong>\u00a0cabinetwork, joinery, paneling, specialty items, boat-building, railroad cross-ties (treated), decorative veneers and for musical instruments (e.g. for guitar fretboard).<\/li>\n<li>Its leaves are used as\u00a0<strong>food by Antheraea paphia<\/strong>\u00a0(silkworms) which produce the tussar silk (Tussah), a form of commercially important wild silk.<\/li>\n<li>The bark is used medicinally against diarrhoea. Oxalic acid can be extracted from it.<\/li>\n<li>The bark and especially the fruit yield\u00a0<strong>pyrogallol and catechol<\/strong>\u00a0to dye and tan leather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Deciduous Forests?<\/h3>\n<p>A deciduous forest is a biome dominated by deciduous trees which lose their leaves seasonally.
