{"id":22236,"date":"2024-04-07T08:44:05","date_gmt":"2024-04-07T03:14:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22236"},"modified":"2025-04-06T18:20:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T12:50:31","slug":"nimmu-padam-darcha-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/nimmu-padam-darcha-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road (NPDR), also known as the <strong>Zanskar Highway,<\/strong> serves as a vital link <strong>between the<\/strong> Indian Union territory of <strong>Ladakhand<\/strong> the state of <strong>Himachal Pradesh<\/strong>, <strong>traversingthrough<\/strong> the picturesque region of <strong>Zanskar, Ladakh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is an all-weather <strong>298-km long<\/strong> road <strong>from Manali<\/strong> (Himachal Pradesh) <strong>to Leh<\/strong> (Ladakh) through Darcha and Nimmu <strong>on the Kargil\u2013Leh Highway.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was constructed by the <strong>Border Roads Organisation (BRO).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is now the <strong>third axis,<\/strong> apart from Manali-Leh Road (428 km) and Srinagar-Leh Road (439 km), <strong>which connects Ladakh to the hinterland.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It derives its strategic importance from the fact that it is not only <strong>shorter vis-a-vis the other two axe<\/strong>s, but <strong>crosses only one pass\u2014Shinkun La<\/strong> (16,558 feet)\u2014on which tunnel work is about to commence by the BRO.<\/li>\n<li>It will be the <strong>first all-weather roadconnecting Ladakh to<\/strong> the <strong>rest of the country<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The connectivity will strengthen defence preparedness and provide a boost to economic <strong>development in the Zanskar valley.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is the Border Roads Organisation (BRO)?<\/h3>\n<p>The BRO is a road construction executive force in India that provides support to Indian Armed Forces.It was formed on 7 May 1960 to secure India&#8217;s borders and develop infrastructure in remote areas of the north and north-east states of the country.
