{"id":22276,"date":"2025-10-27T09:49:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T04:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22276"},"modified":"2025-10-28T16:42:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T11:12:24","slug":"oceanic-nino-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/oceanic-nino-index\/","title":{"rendered":"Oceanic Ni\u00f1o Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Oceanic Ni\u00f1o Index<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s<\/strong> (NOAA) primary indicator for monitoring the ocean part of the seasonal climate pattern called the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation, or \u201cENSO\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The ONI tracks the running <strong>3-month averagesea surface temperatures<\/strong> in the <strong>east-central tropical Pacific<\/strong> between 120\u00b0-170\u00b0W, near the International Dateline, and whether they are warmer or cooler than average.<\/li>\n<li>Index values of <strong>+0.5<\/strong> or <strong>higher indicate El Ni\u00f1o<\/strong> and values of -0.5 or <strong>lower indicate La Ni\u00f1a.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are El Nino and La Nina?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-el-nino-and-la-nina\/\" target=\"_blank\">El Nino and La Nina<\/a> are <strong>two opposing climate trends<\/strong> that deviate from the normal conditions and normally run nine to twelve months, but can often extend.<\/li>\n<li>These events occur every two to seven years on average (El Nino is more frequent than La Nina), but not on a regular basis and together are referred to as the <strong>El Nino-Southern Oscillation<\/strong> (ENSO) cycle by scientists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>El Nino<\/strong> is typically known as the <strong>warm phase<\/strong> (a band of warmer water spreading from west to east in the equatorial Pacific Ocean) and <strong>La Nina<\/strong> is identified as the cold phase (a band of cooler water spreads east-west) of ENSO.<\/li>\n<li>Both El Nino and La Nina can have global effects on weather, wildfires, ecosystems and economics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Southern Annular Mode?<\/h3>\n<p>It is the north-south movement of Southern Westerly Winds over timescales of 10s to 100s of years.
