{"id":22280,"date":"2024-04-08T12:30:56","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T07:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22280"},"modified":"2025-04-06T18:38:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T13:08:20","slug":"satpula-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/satpula-dam\/","title":{"rendered":"Satpula Dam"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Satpula Dam<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Satpula (\u2018sat\u2019 means seven and \u2018pull\u2019 means openings of a bridge) was constructed during the reign of <strong>Sultan Muhammad Shah Tughlaq<\/strong> (1325-1351).<\/li>\n<li>This structure was built using <strong>Delhi quartz<\/strong> \u2014 a stone found in the Aravallis.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was developed as an integral component of the defence<strong> wall<\/strong> of the fourth city of Delhi, Jahanpanah.<\/li>\n<li>The dam served <strong>two purposes<\/strong>: Providing a reliable source of <strong>water for irrigation<\/strong>, and acting as a <strong>defence<\/strong> against possible <strong>intruders.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was developed by identifying appropriate topography, i.e., a large open plain where water can be stored for irrigating large flat lands. Hence, this structure with sluice gates and a reservoir was developed.<\/li>\n<li>Since Sufi saint <strong>Nasiruddin Mahmud<\/strong> (popularly known as Chirag Dehlavi) used to live nearby, people used to believe that the canal water had healing properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For centuries, the area used to host a Diwali mela and the attendees would take a holy dip in the waters and even collect some to take home.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Quartz?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an almost pure chemical compound with constant physical properties. Quartz makes up about 12 percent of the land surface and about 20 percent of the Earth&#8217;s crust.
