{"id":22300,"date":"2024-04-09T06:44:06","date_gmt":"2024-04-09T01:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22300"},"modified":"2025-04-06T18:46:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T13:16:36","slug":"peace-clause-at-wto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/peace-clause-at-wto\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Peace Clause at WTO?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Peace Clause<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the Peace Clause, <strong>WTO members refrain from challenging<\/strong> any <strong>breach in the prescribed subsidy ceiling<\/strong> given <strong>by a developing nation<\/strong> at the dispute settlement forum of the WTO.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Subsidies over<\/strong> and above the <strong>prescribed ceiling<\/strong> are seen as <strong>trade-distorting.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Subsidy ceiling: Under the global trade norms<\/strong>, a WTO member country&#8217;s <strong>food subsidy bill should not breach<\/strong> the limit of <strong>10 percent of the value of production<\/strong> based on the <strong>reference price of 1986-88.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>India has been seeking amendments<\/strong> to the formula for calculating this food subsidy cap.<\/li>\n<li>As an <strong>interim measure<\/strong>, the <strong>WTO members at the Bali ministerial meeting<\/strong> in December 2013 agreed to <strong>put in place<\/strong> a mechanism popularly called <strong>the Peace Clause<\/strong> and committed to negotiating an agreement for a permanent solution.<\/li>\n<li>This clause <strong>will be there till a permanent solution is found<\/strong> to the food stockpiling issue.<\/li>\n<li>While the \u2018<strong>peace clause\u2019<\/strong> allows developing countries to breach the 10% ceiling without invoking legal action by members, it is <strong>subject to onerous notification requirements and numerous conditions such as not distorting global trade<\/strong> and not affecting food security of other members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the World Trade Organization (WTO)?<\/h3>\n<p>The (WTO) was established in 1995 under the Marrakesh Treaty (1994) with the aim of promoting free and fair trade among its member countries.
