


{"id":22360,"date":"2024-04-11T09:08:03","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T03:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22360"},"modified":"2025-10-11T12:20:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T06:50:14","slug":"wigner-crystal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wigner-crystal\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Wigner Crystal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Wigner Crystal<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A Wigner crystal is the <strong>solid phase of electrons<\/strong>, first <strong>predicted by Eugene Wigner<\/strong> in 1934.<\/li>\n<li>It is one of the very first proposed many-body phases<strong> stabilized by<\/strong> the <strong>electron-electron interaction.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Interaction among electrons<\/strong> could lead to their spontaneous <strong>arrangement into a crystal<\/strong>-like configuration, or <strong>lattice, of closely packed electrons<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This could only occur <strong>because of their mutual repulsion<\/strong> and under conditions of <strong>low densities and extremely cold<\/strong> temperatures.<\/li>\n<li>This is because the <strong>potential energy dominates <\/strong>the <strong>kinetic energy at low densities<\/strong>, so the detailed spatial arrangement of the electrons becomes important.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To minimize the potential energy<\/strong>, <strong>electrons form a crystal<\/strong>-like configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>A true Wigner crystal<\/strong>, instead of following the familiar laws of physics in the everyday world, would follow the laws of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/quantum-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">quantum physics<\/a>, in which the electrons would act not like individual particles but more like a single wave.<\/li>\n<li>Wigner crystal is stable at extremely low densities. <strong>If the density increases<\/strong>, the kinetic energy becomes important, and eventually the <strong>crystal melts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Wigner crystal is very <strong>difficult to observe experimentally<\/strong>.
