


{"id":22417,"date":"2024-04-12T05:43:15","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T00:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22417"},"modified":"2025-04-06T19:33:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T14:03:40","slug":"world-cybercrime-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/world-cybercrime-index\/","title":{"rendered":"World Cybercrime Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About World Cybercrime Index<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>identifies<\/strong> the globe\u2019s <strong>major cybercrime hotspots by ranking<\/strong> the most significant <strong>sources of cybercrime at<\/strong> a <strong>national level.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has been developed as a joint partnership between the <strong>University of Oxford and UNSW Canberra.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The data that underpins the index was gathered <strong>through a survey of 92 leading cybercrime experts<\/strong> from around the world who are involved in cybercrime intelligence gathering and investigations.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>ranks roughly 100 countries<\/strong> and identifies key hotspots <strong>according to various categories of cybercrime<\/strong>, including ransomware, credit card theft, and scams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Findings:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It shows that the <strong>threat of cybercrime<\/strong> is <strong>not evenly distributed<\/strong> worldwide.<\/li>\n<li>A relatively <strong>small number of countries house<\/strong> the <strong>greatest cybercriminal threat.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Russia tops the list<\/strong>, followed by Ukraine, China, the USA, Nigeria, and Romania.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>97 countries were named<\/strong> by at least one expert as being a hub for a particular category.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India captured<\/strong> the number <strong>10 spot<\/strong> in the rankings.<\/li>\n<li>The researchers also found that <strong>certain kinds of cybercrime<\/strong> were <strong>associated with particular countries<\/strong>. For example, the <strong>United States <\/strong>was <strong>associated with data and identity theft<\/strong>, while those related to technical products or services seemed to often originate from China.<\/li>\n<li>It is estimated that <strong>cybercrime costs the world around $9.22 trillion in 2024,<\/strong> and this is expected to grow to $13.82 trillion in 2028.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is ransomware?<\/h3>\n<p>Ransomware is malware that employs encryption to hold a victim\u2019s information at ransom. A user or organization\u2019s critical data is encrypted so that they cannot access files, databases, or applications. A ransom is then demanded to provide access.
