The <strong>largest cells in your bone marrow<\/strong> (megakaryocytes) <strong>make platelets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They form in the <strong>shape of a plate,<\/strong> which is where they get their name.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>smaller than red or white blood cells<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>How do platelets control bleeding?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>If one of your <strong>blood vessels gets damaged<\/strong>, it <strong>sends out signals to<\/strong> the <strong>platelets<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The platelets then <strong>rush to the site<\/strong> of damage <strong>and form a plug<\/strong> (<strong>clot<\/strong>) to fix the damage.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>process of spreadingacross<\/strong> the surface of a <strong>damaged blood vessel<\/strong> to stop bleeding is <strong>called adhesion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This is because when platelets get to the site of the injury, they <strong>grow sticky tentacles<\/strong> that <strong>help them stick<\/strong> (adhere) <strong>to one another.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They also send out chemical <strong>signals to attract more platelets<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>additional platelets pile<\/strong> onto the clot in a <strong>process called aggregation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is a healthy platelet count?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>normal platelet<\/strong> count ranges from <strong>150,000 to 450,000<\/strong> platelets per microliter of blood.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Having more than 450,000<\/strong> platelets is a <strong>condition called thrombocytosis<\/strong>; having <strong>less than 150,000 i<\/strong>s <strong>known as thrombocytopenia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms of low platelets<\/strong> include <strong>bruising easily and unusual bleeding<\/strong>, such as excessive bleeding from a small cut or blood in urine or stool.<\/li>\n<li>Platelets can be <strong>essential to surviving surgeries<\/strong> such as organ transplant, as well as fighting cancer, chronic diseases, and traumatic injuries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Donor platelets<\/strong> are <strong>given to patients who don\u2019t have enough<\/strong> of their own, or when a person\u2019s platelets aren\u2019t working correctly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is bone marrow?<\/h3>\n<p>Bone marrow is a spongy substance found in the center of the bones. It manufactures bone marrow stem cells and other substances, which in turn produce blood cells. Each type of blood cell made by the bone marrow has an important job. Red blood cells carry oxygen to tissues in the body. Platelets stop bleeding by helping blood clot.
