{"id":22469,"date":"2024-04-14T06:41:09","date_gmt":"2024-04-14T01:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22469"},"modified":"2025-04-06T19:54:34","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T14:24:34","slug":"fort-emmanuel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/fort-emmanuel\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Emmanuel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Fort Emmanuel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>ruined fort<\/strong> located at Fort Kochi Beach in <strong>Kochi, Kerala.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was originally <strong>built in 1503<\/strong> and reinforced in 1538.<\/li>\n<li>It was a <strong>symbol of<\/strong> the strategic <strong>alliance between<\/strong> the <strong>Maharajah of Kochi and the Monarch of Portugal<\/strong>, after whom it was named.<\/li>\n<li>It was a massive structure, and the <strong>entire township was within its confines<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It greatly <strong>helped in strengthening the Portuguese occupation<\/strong> of the area.<\/li>\n<li>Fort Kochi remained in<strong> Portuguese possession until 1683<\/strong>, when the <strong>Dutch colonial troops captured<\/strong> the territory and destroyed the Portuguese institutions.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Dutch held the fort<\/strong> in their possession <strong>until 1795<\/strong>, when the <strong>British took control<\/strong> by defeating the Dutch.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>By 1806, the Dutch, and later the British<\/strong>, had <strong>destroyed most of the fort<\/strong> walls and its bastions.<\/li>\n<li>Foreign control of Fort Kochi ended in 1947 with Indian independence.<\/li>\n<li>Now only the remains of this fort exist, reminding us of its historic significance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is laterite?<\/h3>\n<p>Laterite is a surface formation that is enriched in iron and aluminum. Found mainly in hot, wet tropical areas, it develops by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the underlying parent rock. Laterite formations in non-tropical areas are products of former geological epochs.
