


{"id":22557,"date":"2024-04-16T11:20:01","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T05:50:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22557"},"modified":"2025-04-06T20:29:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T14:59:24","slug":"what-is-kerogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-kerogen\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Kerogen?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Kerogen:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Kerogen is the <strong>portion of<\/strong> naturally occurring <strong>organic matter<\/strong> that is<strong> non-extractable using organic solvents<\/strong> i.e. it is <strong>insoluble in solvents<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Kerogen represents about <strong>90% of the organic carbon in sediments.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>occurs in source rock<\/strong> and may <strong>expel hydrocarbons upon thermal cracking<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Typical organic constituents<\/strong> of kerogen <strong>are algae and woody plant material<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>consists of lighter<\/strong> as well as <strong>heavier hydrocarbons<\/strong> and acts like a <strong>precursor of oil and natural gas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Kerogens have a <strong>high molecular weight relative to bitumen<\/strong>, or soluble organic matter. <strong>Bitumen forms from kerogen<\/strong> during petroleum generation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Kerogens are <strong>described as Type I,<\/strong> consisting of mainly <strong>algal and amorphous<\/strong> (but presumably algal) <strong>kerogen<\/strong> and highly <strong>likely to generate oil<\/strong>; <strong>Type II,<\/strong> mixed <strong>terrestrial and marine source material<\/strong> that can <strong>generate waxy oil;<\/strong> and <strong>Type III,woody terrestrial source<\/strong> material that <strong>typically generates gas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>types of kerogens<\/strong> present in a rock largely <strong>control the type of hydrocarbons generated<\/strong> in that rock.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Different types of kerogens <strong>contain different amounts of hydrogen<\/strong> relative to carbon and oxygen. The hydrogen content of kerogen is the <strong>controlling factor for oil vs. gas yield<\/strong>s from the primary hydrocarbon-generating reactions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Hydrocarbons?<\/h3>\n<p>The term hydrocarbon refers to an organic chemical compound that is composed exclusively of hydrogen and carbon atoms.
