{"id":22644,"date":"2024-04-20T11:24:38","date_gmt":"2024-04-20T05:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22644"},"modified":"2025-10-13T14:36:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T09:06:13","slug":"national-security-guard-nsg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-security-guard-nsg\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the National Security Guard (NSG)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About National Security Guard (NSG)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>special force<\/strong> in India that has <strong>primarily<\/strong> been <strong>utilised for counter-terrorism activities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The NSG is an elite force providing a <strong>second line of defence<\/strong> for the nation.<\/li>\n<li>The NSG members are also <strong>known as Black Cats<\/strong> because of the black drill cotton coveralls and balaclavas, or helmets, they wear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establishment<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>raised in 1984,following Operation Blue Star<\/strong> and the <strong>assassination of Indira Gandhi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was created by the Cabinet Secretariat <strong>under the National Security Guard Act <\/strong>of the Indian Parliament in 1986.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>modelled o<\/strong>n the pattern of the <strong>SAS of the UK<\/strong> and the <strong>GSG-9 of Germany.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Union Ministry for Home Affairs<\/strong> exercises administrative and operational control over NSG.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Motto: Sarvatra Sarvottama Suraksa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters: New Delhi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Director General (DG):\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The head of the NSG, designated as <strong>Director Genera<\/strong>l (DG), is <strong>selected by the Home Ministry.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>All the selected DGs have been <strong>officers from the Indian Police Service<\/strong> (IPS).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The NSG&#8217;s <strong>specific goals include:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Neutralization of terrorist threats<\/li>\n<li><strong>Handling hijacking situations<\/strong> in the air and on land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bomb disposal<\/strong> (search, detection, and neutralisation of IEDs).<\/li>\n<li>PBI (<strong>Post Blast Investigation<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hostage Rescue<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>VIP Security<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is designed to be employed as a specialised counter-terrorism force &#8220;<strong>only in exceptional situations<\/strong>,&#8221; <strong>not to take over &#8220;functions<\/strong> of the <strong>State Police Forces<\/strong> or other paramilitary forces.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The teams of NSG work on a <strong>basic philosophy of swift and speedy strike<\/strong> and <strong>immediate withdrawal<\/strong> from the theatre of action.<\/li>\n<li>The force is task-oriented and has <strong>two main elements<\/strong> in the form of the <strong>Special Action Group (SAG),<\/strong> comprising <strong>Army personnel, <\/strong>and the <strong>Special Ranger Group (SRG),<\/strong> comprising <strong>personnel<\/strong> drawn <strong>from the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/central-armed-police-force-capf-role-responsibilities-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\">Central Armed Police Forces<\/a> and <strong>State Police Forces.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The NSG also <strong>has a National Bomb Data Centre (NBDC)<\/strong> that maintains a centralised database of bombing activities reported in India and abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The NBDC collects, collates, analyses, and evaluates all terrorist bombing activities and disseminates relevant information to concerned law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Operation Blue Star?<\/h3>\n<p>Operation Bluestar was an Indian Army operation carried out in June 1984 in the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, to flush out militants who were led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a one-time leader of the Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal and a key figure in the growing separatist Khalistan movement at the time.
