{"id":22730,"date":"2024-04-23T08:29:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T02:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22730"},"modified":"2025-04-06T21:40:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T16:10:05","slug":"survey-of-india-soi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/survey-of-india-soi\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Survey of India (SoI)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Survey of India (SoI)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>National Survey and Mapping Organization<\/strong> of the country, under the <strong>Department of Science and Technology<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>oldest scientific department<\/strong> of the Govt. of India.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>set up in 1767<\/strong> (India under British Rule) and has evolved rich traditions over the years.<\/li>\n<li>In its assigned role as the <strong>nation&#8217;s principal mapping agency<\/strong>, SoI bears a special responsibility to <strong>ensure that the country&#8217;s domain is explored and mapped<\/strong> suitably to <strong>provide base maps for<\/strong> expeditious and <strong>integrated development.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Organized into only 5 Directorates in 1950, mainly to look after the mapping needs of Defence Forces in the North West and North East, the Department has now <strong>grown into 18 Directorates<\/strong> spread in all parts of the country to provide the<strong> basic map coverage<\/strong> required for the development of the country.<\/li>\n<li>Its technology, latest in the world, has been oriented to meet the <strong>needs of defense forces<\/strong>, <strong>planners,<\/strong> and <strong>scientists<\/strong> in the fields of geo-sciences, land and resource management.<\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>expert advice<\/strong> is being <strong>utilized by various ministries<\/strong> and undertakings of the Govt. of India in <strong>many sensitive areas,<\/strong> including the settlement of international borders, state boundaries and in assisting planned development of hitherto under developed areas.<\/li>\n<li>The department is also <strong>assisting in many scientific programmes<\/strong> of the nation related to the field of geo-physics, remote sensing, and digital data transfers.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>acts as an adviser to the Govt. of Indiaon all survey matters<\/strong>, viz Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Mapping, and Map Reproduction.<\/li>\n<li>However, the <strong>main duties and responsibilities<\/strong> of the SoI are enumerated below:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>All Geodetic Control,<\/strong> and Geodetic and <strong>Geophysical surveys.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>All <strong>Topographical Control<\/strong>, <strong>Surveys, and Mapping<\/strong> within India.<\/li>\n<li>Mapping and Production of <strong>Geographical Maps<\/strong> and <strong>Aeronautical Charts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Surveys for developmental projects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Survey of forests, cantonments<\/strong>, large scale <strong>city surveys<\/strong>, guide maps, cadastral surveys, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Survey and Mapping of special maps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spellings of Geographical names<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demarcation of the External Boundaries<\/strong> of India, their <strong>depiction on maps<\/strong> published in the country, and also <strong>advice on the demarcation of inter-state boundaries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Research<\/strong> and Development <strong>in Cartography<\/strong>, Printing, Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Topographical Surveys, and Indigenisation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prediction of tides<\/strong> at 44 ports, including 14 foreign ports and <strong>publication of Tide Tables one year in advance<\/strong> to support navigational activities.<\/li>\n<li>Scrutiny and <strong>certification of the external boundaries<\/strong> of India <strong>and the coastline on maps published by other agencies i<\/strong>ncluding private publishers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Q1: What is Cartography?<\/h2>\n<p>The International Cartographic Association defines cartography as the discipline dealing with the conception, production, dissemination and study of maps. Cartography is also about representation \u2013 the map.
