{"id":22738,"date":"2024-04-23T02:40:53","date_gmt":"2024-04-22T21:10:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22738"},"modified":"2025-10-07T12:15:49","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T06:45:49","slug":"biomarkers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/biomarkers\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Biomarkers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Biomarkers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Biomarkers, short for \u2018<strong>Biological Markers\u2019<\/strong> are a p<strong>hysical, chemical, or biological characteristic <\/strong>that is present <strong>in the human body, and measurable <\/strong>too.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/world-health-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\">WHO<\/a> defines a biomarker as \u201c<strong>any measurement<\/strong> reflecting an interaction between a biological system and a potential hazard, which may be <strong>chemical, physical, or biological.<\/strong> The measured response <strong>may be functional and physiological, biochemical at<\/strong> the <strong>cellular level, or a molecular<\/strong> interaction\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Experts also call them <strong>molecular markers<\/strong> and <strong>signature molecules.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>indispensable in diagnosing disease<\/strong>, prescribing the right medication, right dosage, and even while <strong>designing new drugs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Biomarkers <strong>include biomolecules<\/strong> like carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, genes, DNA, RNA, platelets, enzymes, hormones, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classification of Biomarkers:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Based on their source or location<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<li><strong>Molecular<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>have biophysical properties<\/strong>, which <strong>allow their measurements in biological sample<\/strong>s such as blood plasma, serum, cerebrospinal fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage, biopsy, urinalysis, and faecal analysis<\/li>\n<li><strong>Radiographic<\/strong> \u2013 obtained <strong>from imaging studies<\/strong>, for example, bone mineral density<\/li>\n<li><strong>Histologic<\/strong> \u2013 reflect <strong>biochemical or molecular alteration in cells<\/strong>, tissues, or fluids; for example, the staging and grading of cancers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Physiologic<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>measures of body processes<\/strong>, for example, blood pressure, pulse rate, and heart rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Based on roles\/functions:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Susceptibility\/Risk Biomarkers<\/strong>: Indicate the person\u2019s likelihood of developing a particular disease or condition in the near or distant future.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diagnostic Biomarkers<\/strong>: These are used to detect or confirm a particular disease or condition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prognostic Biomarkers<\/strong>: In people who already are confirmed to have a disease, prognostic biomarkers can predict the likelihood of disease progression or relapse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monitoring Biomarkers<\/strong>: These biomarkers are used for one or all of these reasons: to assess the stage or condition of the disease, to measure the exposure to a particular drug, and to measure exposure to an environmental agent.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Predictive Biomarkers<\/strong>: These are used to identify individuals who have a higher likelihood of experiencing a strong outcome when exposed to a particular drug. This will help decide the treatment options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pharmacodynamic\/Response Biomarkers<\/strong>: These reveal that a biological response has happened in patients exposed to a particular drug or environmental agent.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are lipids?<\/h3>\n<p>Lipids are fatty compounds that perform a variety of functions in your body. They\u2019re part of your cell membranes and help control what goes in and out of your cells. They help with moving and storing energy, absorbing vitamins and making hormones.
