It <strong>features<\/strong> four 7 m long <strong>deployable composite booms<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Just as a sailboat is powered by wind in a sail, <strong>solar sails employ the pressure of sunlight for propulsion<\/strong>, eliminating the need for conventional rocket propellant.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Space missions<\/strong> have <strong>demonstrated<\/strong> that <strong>small spacecraft can use solar sails<\/strong> to change their orbits, expanding their possible uses.<\/li>\n<li>Future solar sail missions will need bigger sails and lighter materials to maximize their performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>ACS3 <strong>uses lightweight carbon fiber sail booms<\/strong> instead of traditional metal booms.<\/li>\n<li>This will be the <strong>first test of this technology in space<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is solar sailing?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Light is made up of particles called photons. <strong>Photons don\u2019t have mass, but they have momentum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As sunlight reflects off a shiny solar sail<\/strong>, <strong>some of its momentum getst transferred<\/strong>, <strong>giving the sail a small push<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This push is slight but continuous<\/strong> and, <strong>over time, can impart more thrust to a spacecraft<\/strong> than traditional chemical rockets.<\/p>\n<p>Solar sails <strong>can reach unique destinations<\/strong> that are difficult or impossible to access with other propulsion systems.<\/p>\n<p>They may also be our best option for interstellar travel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are CubeSats?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>CubeSats are a class of nanosatellites that use a standard size and form factor.
