Its <strong>surface temperature<\/strong> is <strong>about 6,100 degrees F<\/strong> (3,400 degrees C). That\u2019s in <strong>contrast toour sun\u2019s<\/strong> surface temperature of about 10,<strong>000 degrees F<\/strong> (5,500 degrees C).<\/li>\n<li>The star&#8217;s low temperature <strong>accounts for its ruddy color.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is a Red Supergiant Star?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>They are <strong>very large stars<\/strong> that are <strong>approaching the later stages of theirstellar life.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They have a <strong>radius<\/strong> that is <strong>several hundred<\/strong> to 1500 <strong>times that of the Sun<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Though they are great in size, the <strong>red color indicates<\/strong> that stars of this type have a relatively <strong>low surface temperature<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>highly luminous<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Most red supergiants are <strong>variable stars.<\/strong> This means, their <strong>degree of brightness<\/strong> changes and <strong>fluctuates as seen on Earth<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Also, these stars are <strong>actively losing mass<\/strong>.
