{"id":22988,"date":"2024-05-02T05:25:28","date_gmt":"2024-05-01T23:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=22988"},"modified":"2025-10-06T11:56:34","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T06:26:34","slug":"isro-space-applications-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/isro-space-applications-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about ISRO\u2019s Space Applications Centre (SAC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Space Applications Centre (SAC)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a major <strong>research and development centre of<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/isro\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Located in <strong>Ahmedabad, Gujarat<\/strong>, SAC is spread across two campuses with multi-disciplinary activities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Genesis<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The genesis of the centre dates back to <strong>1966, <\/strong>with the <strong>establishment of<\/strong> the <strong>Experimental Satellite Communication Earth Station (ESCES) by<\/strong> the late <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/vikram-sarabhai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Vikram Sarabhai<\/a> in Ahmedabad.<\/li>\n<li>Later <strong>in 1972,<\/strong> the <strong>different units of ISROin Ahmedabad<\/strong> pursuing research in applications of space technology <strong>were merged to form SAC.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The core competence of the centre lies in the <strong>development of space borne and air borne instruments\/payloads<\/strong> and <strong>their applications<\/strong> for national development and societal benefits.\n<ul>\n<li>These applications are in diverse areas and primarily meet the<strong> communication<\/strong>, <strong>navigation, and remote sensing needs<\/strong> of the country.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Besides these, the centre also contributes significantly to scientific and <strong>planetary missions of ISRO <\/strong>like Chandrayan-1, the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/mangalyaan-mars-orbiter-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mars Orbiter Mission<\/a>, etc.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>communication transponders developed<\/strong> at <strong>this Centre for<\/strong> Indian National Satellite (<strong>INSAT<\/strong>) <strong>and<\/strong> Geo Synchronous Satellite (<strong>GSAT<\/strong>) series of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/types-of-satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a> are used by the government and private sector for VSAT, DTH, Internet, broadcasting, telephones, etc.<\/li>\n<li>This centre also <strong>designs and develops<\/strong> the <strong>optical and microwave sensors<\/strong> for the satellites<strong>, signal and image processing software<\/strong>, <strong>GIS software,<\/strong> and many<strong> applications for the Earth Observation (EO) programme<\/strong> of ISRO.\n<ul>\n<li>These applications are in diverse areas of Geosciences, Agriculture, Environment and Climate Change, Physical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Hydrosphere, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Facilities<\/strong>: The facilities at SAC include highly sophisticated <strong>payload integration laboratories<\/strong>, electronic and mechanical <strong>fabrication facilities<\/strong>, <strong>environmental test facilities<\/strong>, systems reliability \/ assurance group, image processing and analysis facilities, project management support group, and a well-stocked library.<\/li>\n<li>SAC is a host institution for the <strong>training programmes for students from the Asia Pacific<\/strong> region under the aegis of the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (CSSTE-AP) <strong>in satellite meteorology and communication.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the Indian National Satellite (INSAT)?<\/h3>\n<p>INSAT or the Indian National Satellite System is a series of multipurpose Geo-stationary satellites launched by ISRO to satisfy the telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology, and search and rescue needs of India. Commissioned in 1983, INSAT is the largest domestic communication system in the Asia Pacific Region.
