


{"id":23020,"date":"2024-05-03T02:04:49","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T20:34:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23020"},"modified":"2025-10-04T11:44:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T06:14:24","slug":"garo-hills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/garo-hills\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Garo Hills"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Garo Hills<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Garo Hills form the <strong>western part ofMeghalaya<\/strong> State and covers an area of approximately 8,000 sq km.<\/li>\n<li>The range is part of the <strong>Meghalaya subtropical forests eco-region<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Situated <strong>close to the Indo-Bangladesh border<\/strong>, the Garo hills are <strong>part of the Patkai hill range<\/strong>, <strong>whichextendsacross<\/strong> the <strong>Indo-Myanmar border.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>one of the wettest places<\/strong> in the world.<\/li>\n<li>The region is <strong>drained by<\/strong> various <strong>tributaries of<\/strong> the <strong>Brahmaputra River<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Garo Hills comprises 5 districts; North Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, and South-West Garo Hills.<\/li>\n<li>The Garo Hills are mostly <strong>dominated by<\/strong> the tribes known as <strong>Garos<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Garos call themselves <strong>Achik-mande.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Garos form the <strong>second largest tribein<\/strong> the state of <strong>Meghalaya<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>one of the last<\/strong> remaining <strong>matrilineal tribes in the world<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Their <strong>main festival is the Wangala festival<\/strong>, a harvest festival, which is predominantly celebrated by the Songsareks (those following the traditional religion of animism).<\/li>\n<li>Two mountain ranges, the <strong>Arabella range and the Tura rang<\/strong>e, <strong>passthrough the Garo Hills, forming<\/strong> the great <strong>Balpakram valley<\/strong> in between.<\/li>\n<li>Balpakram area is considered <strong>sacred for the Garo<\/strong> community due to their <strong>belief that the spirits of the dead sojourn here\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>highest point<\/strong> in the Garo Hills is <strong>Nokrek Peak,<\/strong> with an elevation of 1412 m, which is covered by a thick film of lush forest.<\/li>\n<li>The region is home to the esteemed <strong>Nokrek National Park<\/strong>, protects a highly diverse plant and animal diversity. In 2009, the park was <strong>designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q<\/strong>: What is the Geological Survey of India (GSI)?<\/h3>\n<p>GSI was set up in 1851 primarily to find coal deposits for the Railways.
