But it was not enough to last them beyond a week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1908<\/strong>, the <strong>Imperial Russian Navy launched<\/strong> the <strong>submarine Pochtovy<\/strong>, which <strong>used a gasoline engine fed with compressed air<\/strong> and exhausted underwater.<\/li>\n<li><strong>These two approaches<\/strong>, the <strong>use of a fuel<\/strong> that provides energy to an open-cycle system, <strong>and the provision of oxygen to an aerobic engine<\/strong> in a closed cycle, <strong>characterise AIP today.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Most of these systems generate electricity<\/strong>, which, <strong>in turn drives an electric motor for propulsion or recharges <\/strong>the boat\u2019s <strong>batteries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>introduction of AIP<\/strong> vastly <strong>improved the underwater endurance<\/strong> of these submarines and gave them a distinct advantage.<\/li>\n<li>AIP is mostly <strong>implemented as an auxiliary source<\/strong>, with the <strong>traditional diesel engine handling surface propulsion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>AIP technology can be <strong>installed on existing,<\/strong> older-generation <strong>submarines by inserting a new hull section <\/strong>during a retrofit.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>typical conventional power plant<\/strong> provides <strong>3 megawatts maximum<\/strong>, and an <strong>AIP source around 10 percent<\/strong> of that. A nuclear submarine\u2019s propulsion plant is much greater than 20 megawatts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advantages of AIP system:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It allows the <strong>submarines to stay for longer hours<\/strong> in the water.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>decreases the noise levels made<\/strong> by the submarines. This <strong>makes it hard to detect<\/strong> the submarines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Types of AIP:<\/strong> Open-cycle systems, Closed-cycle diesel engines, Closed-cycle steam turbines Stirling cycle engines and Fuel cells.<\/li>\n<li>The Defence Research and Development Organisation (<strong>DRDO<\/strong>) is <strong>using the fuel cells-based AIP System.<\/strong> It is <strong>unique as hydrogen is generated<\/strong> onboard. The plant was operated in endurance mode and max power mode as per the user requirements. The system is being <strong>developed by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) of DRDO.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Types of Submarines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Conventional or Diesel-electric submarine<\/strong>: They <strong>need atmospheric oxygen to run<\/strong> the <strong>diesel generator,<\/strong> which in <strong>turn charges the batteries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nuclear Submarine<\/strong>: It is a submarine <strong>powered by a nuclear reactor<\/strong>, but not necessarily nuclear-armed. They have <strong>considerable performance advantages<\/strong> over conventional submarines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Nuclear Submarine?<\/h3>\n<p>A nuclear submarine is a naval vessel that uses a nuclear reactor to power its propulsion. The nuclear submarines may or may not carry nuclear weapons. The history of nuclear submarines goes back to the 1950s when the US first developed it in 1954, named USS Nautilus. Soon it was followed by Russia and subsequently by other naval powers such as France, Britain and China.
