


{"id":23120,"date":"2024-05-06T01:46:05","date_gmt":"2024-05-05T20:16:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23120"},"modified":"2025-04-07T00:22:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T18:52:29","slug":"goldene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/goldene\/","title":{"rendered":"Goldene"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Goldene:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the first free-standing <strong>2D metal<\/strong> and is only one <strong>atom thick.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How is it created?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Researchers first sandwiched an atomic monolayer of silicon <strong>between layers of titanium carbide.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>When they deposited gold on top of this sandwich structure, the gold atoms diffused into the material and replaced the silicon atoms, forming a trapped monolayer of gold atoms.<\/li>\n<li>Subsequently, scientists etched away the titanium carbide layers to create a free-standing, one atom thick layer of gold.<\/li>\n<li>This was done with the help of an age-old Japanese technique used to forge katanas and high-quality knives, using a chemical popularly known <strong>as Murakami\u2019s reagent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>These sheets of goldene are roughly 100 nano metres thick (a nanometre is a billionth of a metre), approximately 400 times thinner than the thinnest commercially available gold leaf.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applications<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It can be used in the electronics<strong> industry.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It could also be used in carbon dioxide conversion, hydrogen-generating catalysis, selective production of value-added chemicals, hydrogen production, water purification, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance:<\/strong> It holds promise as a great catalyst because it\u2019s much more economically viable than thicker, three-dimensional gold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Murakami&#8217;s reagent?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an etching reagent developed for use in the investigation of the structure of iron-carbon-chromium alloys.
