{"id":23163,"date":"2024-10-17T03:21:54","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T21:51:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23163"},"modified":"2025-04-07T00:40:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T19:10:24","slug":"west-nile-fever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/west-nile-fever\/","title":{"rendered":"What is West Nile Fever?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About West Nile virus:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>West Nile Virus (WNV) is a member of the <strong>flavivirus genus<\/strong> and belongs to the family Flaviviridae.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>first isolated<\/strong> in a woman in the West Nile district of <strong>Uganda in 1937.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is commonly found in <strong>Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America<\/strong> and <strong>West Asia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it typically spikes between the summer and autumn months of June and September.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission: <\/strong>Human infection is most often the result of <strong>bites from infected mosquitoes.<\/strong> Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds, which circulate the virus in their blood for a few days.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The virus may also be transmitted through contact with other infected animals, their blood, or other tissues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Infection with WNV is either<strong> asymptomatic<\/strong> (no symptoms) in <strong>around 80% of infected people,<\/strong> or can lead to West Nile fever or severe West Nile disease.<\/li>\n<li>About <strong>20% of people<\/strong> who become <strong>infected with WNV<\/strong> will develop West Nile fever and symptoms include fever, headache, and tiredness, and body aches, nausea, vomiting, occasionally with a skin rash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>So far, 19 countries, including Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and T\u00fcrkiye and Kosovo have reported outbreaks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment: No vaccine<\/strong> is available for WNV and only supportive treatments can be provided to neuroinvasive WNV patients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Viruses?<\/h3>\n<p>These are parasitic entities lacking cells, making them unclassifiable within any specific kingdom. They are sub-microscopic infectious agents that can only replicate inside host cells of living organisms.
