{"id":23179,"date":"2024-05-08T02:49:36","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T21:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23179"},"modified":"2025-09-27T11:32:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T06:02:08","slug":"shinkun-la-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/shinkun-la-tunnel\/","title":{"rendered":"Shinkun La Tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Shinkun La Tunnel:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an upcoming <strong>motorable tunnelunder the<\/strong> 16,580 feet high <strong>Shinku-La pass betweenHimachal\u2019s<\/strong> Lahaul valley <strong>and Ladakh\u2019s<\/strong> Zanskar valley.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is located on the Nimu-Padam-Darcha Road link.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>length<\/strong> of the tunnel will be <strong>4.1 km.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>After completion<\/strong>, the Shinku-la tunnel will <strong>be the longest high altitude highway tunnel<\/strong> in the world.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/border-roads-organisation-bro\/#:~:text=About%20Border%20Roads%20Organisation,east%20states%20of%20the%20country.\" target=\"_blank\">Border Roads Organization<\/a><strong> (BRO) will construct<\/strong> the tunnel at a cost of Rs. 1,681.5 crores.<\/li>\n<li>It will <strong>provide all-weather road connectivity to Ladakh,<\/strong> and this will be the shortest route to the border areas of Ladakh.<\/li>\n<li>It is expected to <strong>streamline the transportationof heavy machinery to strategic locationssuch as Kargil, Siachen, and the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/line-of-actual-control-lac\/#:~:text=The%20LAC%20is%20the%20demarcation,the%20western%20sector%20in%20Ladakh.\" target=\"_blank\">Line of Control<\/a> (LOC), reducing travel distances by approximately 100 km.<\/li>\n<li>The traffic movement in the tunnel will <strong>not be vulnerable to long-range artillery shelling<\/strong> or missile firings, either by China or Pakistan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Facts about Border Roads Organisation (BRO):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>road construction executive force<\/strong> in India that provides support to the Indian Armed Forces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establishment<\/strong>: It was formed on 7 May, <strong>1960, to secure India&#8217;s borders and develop infrastructure in remote areas<\/strong> of the north and north-east states of the country.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>developsand maintains road<\/strong> networks <strong>in India&#8217;s border areas and friendly neighboring countries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This includes infrastructure operations in 19 states and three union territories (including Andaman and Nicobar Islands) and neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan, and Sri Lanka.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Officers and personnel from<\/strong> the <strong>General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) form<\/strong> the <strong>parent cadre<\/strong> of the BRO.<\/li>\n<li>It is also <strong>staffed by officers and troops drawn from the Indian Army&#8217;s Corps of Engineers<\/strong> on extra regimental employment (on deputation).<\/li>\n<li>BRO is also included in the Order of Battle of the Armed Forces, ensuring their support at any time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Motto of the organization<\/strong>: <strong>Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam<\/strong> (everything is achievable through hardwork).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the Line of Control (LOC)?<\/h3>\n<p>LoC is a geographical line lying between India and Pakistan\u2019s controlled parts of the former (under the British) Jammu and Kashmir and controlled by the army. This line is not actually a legally recognized international boundary but prevails as per de facto.
