


{"id":23211,"date":"2024-05-09T03:00:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T21:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23211"},"modified":"2025-10-04T12:51:32","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T07:21:32","slug":"widal-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/widal-test\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Widal Test?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Widal Test:\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a test done for <strong>diagnosing typhoid <\/strong>fever<strong>.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Typhoid fever, also <strong>known asenteric fever,<\/strong> is a <strong>bacterial infection<\/strong> caused by the bacterium <strong>Salmonella Typhi<\/strong>, and it is commonly <strong>spread through contaminated food or water.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A person with typhoid fever will experience symptoms like fatigue, high fever, headache, diarrhoea or constipation, abdominal pain, weight loss, and red spots.<\/li>\n<li>These <strong>symptoms mimic those of malaria, dengue, influenza<\/strong>, and typhus, to name a few, <strong>making it difficult to diagnose<\/strong> without proper testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As with other infections, our <strong>immune system produces antibodies<\/strong> in the blood against the bacteria, causing enteric fever.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The widal test is a <strong>serological test<\/strong> that <strong>detects antibodies<\/strong> against the bacteria <strong>in a patient\u2019s blood sample<\/strong>, indicating whether or not they have been infected with the bacteria.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is used to <strong>help diagnose a current or recent infectionor<\/strong> to <strong>determine if an individual<\/strong> has <strong>had a previous typhoid infection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s a <strong>point-of-care test<\/strong> and doesn\u2019t need special skills or infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>Developed in the late 1800s by a French physician, it is <strong>no longer used in many countries<\/strong> because of its flaws.The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/world-health-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organization<\/a> (<strong>WHO)has said<\/strong> that due to the various factors that can influence the results of a Widal test, it is <strong>best not to rely too much on this test.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Limitations:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>single positive <\/strong>Widal test <strong>report doesn\u2019t<\/strong> necessarily <strong>mean a typhoid infection<\/strong> is present, and a <strong>negative report doesn\u2019t confirm the disease\u2019s absence<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To diagnose an active infection<\/strong>, clinicians <strong>must test at least two serum samples<\/strong> taken <strong>at least 7-14 days apart<\/strong>, so that they may detect a change in the concentrations of the antibodies. But getting two samples is <strong>rarely feasible and time-consuming.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In areas with a<\/strong> high and <strong>continuous typhoid burden<\/strong>, <strong>certain levels of antibodies<\/strong> against the bacteria <strong>may already be present<\/strong> in the blood.
