


{"id":23263,"date":"2024-05-11T11:58:28","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T06:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23263"},"modified":"2025-10-13T12:48:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T07:18:56","slug":"carboxysomes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/carboxysomes\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Carboxysomes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Carboxysomes:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>These are intracellular structures found in many <strong>autotrophic <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/bacteria\/#:~:text=Quest%20for%20UPSC%20CSE%20Panels&amp;text=Bacteria%20are%20microscopic%20single%2Dcelled,deeper%20trenches%20in%20the%20oceans.\" target=\"_blank\">bacteria<\/a>, including Cyanobacteria, Knallgasbacteria, Nitroso- and Nitrobacteria.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>proteinaceous structures<\/strong> resembling phage heads in their morphology; they contain the enzymes of carbon dioxide fixation in these organisms.<\/li>\n<li>Similar structures are known to harbor the B12-containing coenzyme glycerol dehydratase, the key enzyme of glycerol fermentation to 1,3-propanediol, in some <strong>Enterobacteriaceae, such as Salmonella.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They <strong>perform carbon fixation<\/strong>, which is the process of converting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into organic compounds that can be used by the cell for growth and energy.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>These are made of polyhedral protein shells about 80 to 140 nanometres in diameter.<\/li>\n<li>These compartments are thought to concentrate carbon dioxide to overcome the inefficiency <strong>of RuBisCo<\/strong> (ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase\/oxygenase) \u2013 the predominant enzyme in carbon fixation and the rate limiting enzyme in the Calvin cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the most promising application of carboxysome is in plant <strong>synthetic biology<\/strong>, whereby the introduction of carboxysome into plant chloroplasts as the CO2-concentrating mechanism can <strong>improve photosynthetic efficiency<\/strong> and <strong>crop yield.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Q1: What is Carbon fixation?<\/h2>\n<p>It is the conversion of atmospheric carbon dioxide into organic molecules by autotrophic organisms.
