hectares following a rationalisation exercise mandated by the Supreme Court of India&#8217;s Central Empowered Committee (CEC).<\/p>\n<h2>About Critical Tiger Habitat<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Critical Tiger Habitat (CTH),<\/strong>\u00a0also known as<strong>\u00a0core areas of tiger reserve<\/strong>s, are\u00a0<strong>identified under the Wild Life Protection Act (WLPA), 1972.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These are\u00a0<strong>based on scientific evidence\u00a0<\/strong>that &#8220;such areas are required to be\u00a0<strong>kept as inviolate\u00a0<\/strong>for the purpose of tiger conservation,\u00a0<strong>without affecting the rights of the Scheduled Tribes\u00a0<\/strong>or such\u00a0<strong>other forest dwellers&#8221;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>notification\u00a0<\/strong>of CTH is\u00a0<strong>done by the state government in consultation with the expert committe<\/strong>e constituted for the purpose.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inviolate Status:\u00a0<\/strong>These areas are kept inviolate (<strong>free from human activities<\/strong>) for the purpose of tiger conservation.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>forests peripheral to CTH\u00a0<\/strong>are\u00a0<strong>notified as buffer areas,<\/strong>\u00a0which act as a transition between CTH and non-tiger reserves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key Facts about Central Empowered Committee<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was s<strong>et up in 2002\u00a0<\/strong>(reconstituted in 2008)\u00a0<strong>by the Supreme Court.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It served as a\u00a0<strong>watchdog for issues pertaining to environmental conservation\u00a0<\/strong>and compliance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 2023, the Supreme Court transferredthe CEC, to the Ministry of Environment<\/strong>, Forest, and Climate Change.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>According to the Union Environment Ministry\u2019s notification, the central empowered committee will now be\u00a0<strong>institutionalised as a permanent statutory\u00a0<\/strong>body, moving away from its earlier ad hoc status.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composition of the new CEC<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It will have a\u00a0<strong>chairman\u00a0<\/strong>with\u00a0<strong>experience of 25 years in the field of environment,\u00a0<\/strong>forests and wildlife\u00a0<strong>or proven administrative experience<\/strong>\u00a0of not less than 2<strong>5 years in the central or state governments.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He will be\u00a0<strong>nominated by the central government<\/strong>\u00a0for a t<strong>enure of three years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>age limit<\/strong>\u00a0for the Chairperson is set at\u00a0<strong>66 years,<\/strong>\u00a0and the rank must not be below that of an Additional Secretary.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>member secretary<\/strong>\u00a0will be a\u00a0<strong>full-time serving officer of the government<\/strong>\u00a0not below the rank of Deputy Inspector General of forests or director in the Government of India.<\/li>\n<li>This person is required to\u00a0<strong>have special knowledge\u00a0<\/strong>in the field of environment, forests, or wildlife, and e<strong>xperience of at least 12 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The member secretary too, will be\u00a0<strong>appointed by the Centre.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>three expert members<\/strong>\u00a0will be\u00a0<strong>one each from<\/strong>\u00a0the fields of the\u00a0<strong>environment, forests, and wildlife\u00a0<\/strong>with experience of at least 20 years.<\/li>\n<li>They will also be\u00a0<strong>nominated by the Centre f<\/strong>or a tenure of three years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>One notable
