{"id":23603,"date":"2024-05-22T03:37:28","date_gmt":"2024-05-21T22:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23603"},"modified":"2025-04-07T03:40:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T22:10:58","slug":"rangelands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rangelands\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Rangelands?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Rangelands:\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The rangelands category of <strong>Earth\u2019s land cover<\/strong> consists mostly of the <strong>natural grasslands <\/strong>used by livestock and wild animals to graze and forage.<\/li>\n<li>The vegetation of ranges may include <strong>tallgrass prairies, steppes<\/strong> (shortgrass prairies), desert shrublands, shrub woodlands, savannas, chaparrals, and tundras.<\/li>\n<li>Rangelands are the &#8220;<strong>Wild Open Spaces&#8221;<\/strong> that cover about half of the earth&#8217;s land surface and half of western North America.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reasons for degradation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The problem is driven largely by <strong>converting pastures to cropland<\/strong> and other land use changes due to <strong>population growth<\/strong> and urban expansion,<\/li>\n<li>Rapidly rising food, fibre and fuel demands, excessive grazing, abandonment and policies that incentivise overexploitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance of Rangelands<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These are used for<strong> livestock forage, wildlife habitat<\/strong>, water, mineral resources, wood products, wildland recreation, open space and natural beauty.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>These are an important economic engine in many countries and define cultures.
