Authority of India (TRAI) recently prescribed a cap on tariffs charged to Public Data Offices (PDOs) under the PM-WANI scheme, in order to keep public Wi-Fi affordable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About PM-WANI Scheme<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scheme was launched by the <\/span><b>Department of Telecommunication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in December 2020.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme aims to <\/span><b>enhance the proliferation of<\/b> <b>public WiFi hotspots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create robust digital communications infrastructure in the country, especially in rural areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through better access to public hotspots, the government aims to increase employment for small and micro-entrepreneurs and <\/span><b>provide low-cost internet to the underserved urban poor and rural households.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme <\/span><b>encourages local shops and establishments to provide Wi-Fi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for last-mile internet delivery, which does <\/span><b>not require a licence or charge a registration fee.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>PM-WANI Ecosystem Components<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Public Data Office (PDO):\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will <\/span><b>establish, maintain, and operate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only WANI-compliant <\/span><b>Wi-Fi access points<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>deliver broadband services<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to subscribers. <\/span><b>No license is required<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from DoT.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>local shops and small establishments as PDOs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may <\/span><b>earn extra income<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from selling internet without any requirement of license, registration, and\/or any fees to DoT.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be an <\/span><b>aggregator of PDOs and perform<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the functions relating to <\/span><b>authorization and accounting.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>App Provider:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It will develop an App to <\/span><b>register users and discover WANI-compliant Wi-Fi hotspots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the nearby area and display the same within the App for accessing the internet services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Central Registry:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will <\/span><b>maintain the details of App Providers, PDOAs, and PDOs.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is currently maintained by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How can you Access the PM-WANI internet?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A user who wants to access broadband through public wifi will need to d<\/span><b>ownload the relevant app, get authenticated,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thereafter <\/span><b>access broadband at any public wifi hotspot.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the user reaches a public wifi hotspot, the <\/span><b>app <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the mobile phone <\/span><b>will show various available networks. <\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">user can then choose <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the wifi network of choice,<\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> pay an amount<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014either online or through voucher\u2014and <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">use the network till the
