{"id":23611,"date":"2026-05-28T12:45:56","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T07:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23611"},"modified":"2026-05-28T16:32:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T11:02:48","slug":"prime-minister-wi-fi-access-network-interface-pm-wani-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/prime-minister-wi-fi-access-network-interface-pm-wani-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"PM-WANI"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>PM-WANI Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced a series of user-friendly reforms under the Prime Minister\u2019s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) framework.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About PM-WANI<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PM-WANI (Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) was launched by the <\/span><b>Department of Telecommunication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in December 2020.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims to <\/span><b>enhance the proliferation of public WiFi hotspots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create robust digital communications infrastructure in the country, especially in rural areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Objectives<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>overcome the digital divide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by increasing internet connectivity, especially in remote and rural regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>empower individuals and businesses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to participate in the digital economy through affordable internet access.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>encourage local entrepreneurs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by enabling shopkeepers and individuals to become Public Data Office (PDO) operators.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>PM-WANI Ecosystem Components<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Public Data Office (PDO): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will establish, maintain, and operate only WANI-compliant Wi-Fi access points and deliver broadband services to subscribers. No license is required from DoT.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The local shops and small establishments as PDOs may earn extra income from selling internet without any requirement of license, registration, and\/or any fees to DoT.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It will be an aggregator of PDOs and perform the functions relating to authorization and accounting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>App Provider:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It wil<\/span><b>l develop an App to register users <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and discover WANI-compliant Wi-Fi hotspots in the nearby area and display the same within the App for accessing the internet services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Central Registry: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will maintain the details of App Providers, PDOAs, and PDOs.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is currently maintained by the <\/span><b>Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsonair.gov.in\/pm-wani-gets-major-citizen-friendly-upgrade-to-make-public-wi-fi-simpler-and-more-accessible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">News On Air<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PM-WANI was launched by the Department of Telecommunication in December 2020.
