{"id":23683,"date":"2024-05-27T05:45:32","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T00:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23683"},"modified":"2025-04-07T04:13:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T22:43:58","slug":"nyishi-tribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/nyishi-tribe\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Nyishi Tribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Nyishi Tribe:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Nyishi are the <strong>largest ethnic group in Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Nishi, their traditional language<\/strong>, Nyi refers to \u201ca man\u201d and the word shi denotes \u201ca being\u201d, which combined together refers to a civilized human being.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>The Nyishi <strong>language belongs to<\/strong> the <strong>Sino-Tibetan family<\/strong>; however, its origin is disputed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geographical Distribution:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are <strong>concentrated in eight districts of Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong>, East Kameng, Pakke Kesang, Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri, Kamle, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, and Upper Subansiri.<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>also live in<\/strong> Sonitpur and the North Lakhimpur district of <strong>Assam.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Their <strong>population of around 300,000<\/strong> makes them the <strong>most populous tribe in Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong>, closely followed by the combined tribes of the Adis and the Galos, who were the most populous in the 2001 census.<\/li>\n<li>The Nyishi <strong>support themselves <\/strong>with <strong>slash-and-burn agriculture<\/strong> and <strong>hunting and fishing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Along with agriculture and allied activities, the Nyishis are <strong>experts in handicrafts<\/strong> such as weaving, cane and bamboo works, pottery, blacksmith, wood carving, carpentry, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Religion:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the 2011 Census, Nyishi follows <strong>Christian (31%), Hinduism (29%),<\/strong> and <strong>many still follow<\/strong> the <strong>indigenous Donyi Polo.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Donyi means the Sun, and Polo means the Moon,<\/strong> which are revered as the Ayu Donyi (Great Mother Sun) and Atu Polu (Great Father Moon).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Festivals:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The Nyishi celebrates three major festivals, namely, <strong>Boori-Boo<\/strong>t (February), <strong>Nyokum<\/strong> (February), and <strong>Longte<\/strong> (April).<\/li>\n<li>They celebrate and pleases the gods and goddesses for a good harvest, health, wealth, and prosperity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polygyny is prevalent<\/strong> among the Nyishi.<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>trace their descent patrilineally<\/strong> and are <strong>divided into several clans.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>One striking feature of <strong>Nyishi society<\/strong> is that it is <strong>neither based on a caste <\/strong>system nor stratified into classes, except for a loose type of social distinction which is not determined by birth or occupation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Nyishis <strong>consider women<\/strong> the <strong>source of peace, progress<\/strong> and <strong>prosperity<\/strong>.
