Peacekeepers on May 29.<\/p>\n<h2>About Dag Hammarskj\u00f6ld Medal<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0<strong>highest honour awarded to UN peacekeepers.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was established in 1997 as a\u00a0<strong>posthumous award<\/strong>\u00a0given to\u00a0<strong>members of peacekeeping operations who lost their lives during service<\/strong>\u00a0with a peacekeeping operation\u00a0<strong>under the operational control<\/strong>\u00a0and authority<strong>\u00a0of the United Nations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Each year on Peacekeeper&#8217;s Day (May 29)<\/strong>, this medal is\u00a0<strong>awarded to any member state that has lost one or more military or police peacekeepers<\/strong>\u00a0at a ceremony at United Nations headquarters.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>named after<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>second Secretary-General<\/strong>\u00a0of the United Nations,\u00a0<strong>Dag Hammarskjold.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On 6 October\u00a0<strong>1998<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>first Medal<\/strong>\u00a0was presented t<strong>o the family of Dag Hammarskj\u00f6ld.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dag Hammarskjold was Secretary-General of the United Nations from April 10, 1953, until September 18, 1961, when he died in a plane crash while on a peace mission in the Congo.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The second medal honoured Commandant Ren\u00e9 de Labarri\u00e8re, Military Observer in the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, who was the first peacekeeper to lose his life in a United Nations peacekeeping operation, in 1948.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Other UN Awards<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional courage<\/strong>\u00a0in the face of extreme danger while fulfilling the mandate of their missions or their functions in the service of humanity and the United Nations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award:\u00a0<\/strong>It was started in 2016 to recognise the dedication and\u00a0<strong>effort of an individual peacekeeper<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>promoting the 1950s,<\/strong>\u00a0India has\u00a0<strong>sent over 290,000 peacekeepers<\/strong>\u00a0to more than 50 missions worldwide, making it the\u00a0<strong>largest contributor<\/strong>\u00a0to UN peacekeeping efforts.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Today, over 5,000 Indian troops serve in nine of the eleven active missions,\u00a0<\/strong>often in dangerous and hostile regions, dedicated to
