{"id":23827,"date":"2024-11-27T06:27:39","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T00:57:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23827"},"modified":"2025-04-07T05:13:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T23:43:13","slug":"key-facts-about-periyar-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/key-facts-about-periyar-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Periyar River"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Pennaiyar River:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a major river in southern India, flowing through <strong>Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also known as the <strong>South Pennar River<\/strong>, <strong>Dakshina Pinakini<\/strong> in Kannada, and <strong>Thenpennai<\/strong>, <strong>Ponnaiyar<\/strong>, in Tamil.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: It originates in the <strong>Nandi Hills<\/strong> in the Chikkaballapura district of <strong>Karnataka<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It then flows southward for 80 km through Karnataka to northwestern Tamil Nadu, where it turns southeastward and flows 320 km to <strong>enter the Bay of Bengal at Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The basin is <strong>bounded<\/strong> on the northwest and south <strong>by various ranges of the Eastern Ghats,<\/strong> like the <strong>Velikonda Range, <\/strong>the <strong>Nagari Hills,<\/strong> the <strong>Javadu Hills,<\/strong> the <strong>Shevaroy Hills<\/strong>, the Chitteri Hills and the Kalrayan Hills, and in the east by the Bay of Bengal.<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>second largest interstate east-flowing riverbasin<\/strong> among the 12 basins lying between the Pennar and Cauvery basins.<\/li>\n<li>It drains an area of 16,019 sq.km., out of which nearly <strong>77 percent lies in Tamil Nadu<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Major <strong>tributaries<\/strong> are the <strong>Chinnar, Markanda, Vaniar<\/strong>, and <strong>Pamban<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The river is <strong>extensively dammed<\/strong> for irrigation, <strong>especially in Tamil Nadu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The only major metropolitan <strong>city in the catchment is Bengaluru<\/strong>, which also happens to be the biggest polluter of the river.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is the Eastern Ghats?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an ancient discontinuous low mountain range that spreads along the East coast of the Indian Peninsula.
