{"id":23859,"date":"2024-05-26T09:57:02","date_gmt":"2024-05-26T04:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23859"},"modified":"2025-04-07T05:26:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T23:56:31","slug":"about-graphite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/about-graphite\/","title":{"rendered":"About Graphite"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Graphite<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>opaque, non-metallic carbon polymorph<\/strong> that is blackish silver in colour and metallic to dull in sheen.<\/li>\n<li>Since it resembles metal lead, it is also known colloquially as <strong>black lead or plumbago.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation:<\/strong> It is formed by the metamorphosis of sediments containing carbonaceous material.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Molecular structure<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It consists of a <strong>ring of six carbon atoms<\/strong> closely bonded together hexagonally in widely spaced layers.<\/li>\n<li>The bonds within the layers are strong, but the bonds between the layers are less in number and therefore weaker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Properties:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a naturally occurring form of <strong>crystalline carbon and <\/strong>is a stable form of carbon.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>extremely soft<\/strong>, cleaves with very light pressure, and has a very low specific gravity.<\/li>\n<li>In contrast, it is extremely resistant to heat and nearly inert in contact with almost any other material. These extreme properties give it a wide range of uses in metallurgy and manufacturing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applications:<\/strong> It is used in pencils, lubricants, crucibles, foundry facings, polishes, arc lamps, batteries, brushes for electric motors, and cores of nuclear reactors.<\/li>\n<li>Globally it is mined extensively in China, India, Brazil, North Korea, and Canada.<\/li>\n<li>Why Sri Lankan Graphite? Sri Lankan graphite is considered among the purest in the world with more <strong>than 98% carbon content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Graphene?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a one-atom-thick layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice.
