around 20,000, and more than any other country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rabies<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabies is a <\/span><b>vaccine-preventable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>zoonotic, viral disease.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by the <\/span><b>Rabies virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RABV) which affects the <\/span><b>central nervous system.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabies infects mammals, including dogs, cats, livestock and wildlife.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the <\/span><b>neglected tropical diseases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NTD) that predominantly affects already marginalized, poor, and vulnerable populations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Transmission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rabies spreads to people and animals via saliva, usually through bites, scratches, or direct contact with mucosa (e.g. eyes, mouth, or open wounds).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Clinically, it has two forms:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Furious rabies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is characterized by <\/span><b>hyperactivity and hallucinations.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Paralytic rabies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is characterized by paralysis and coma.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Rabies<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incubation period for rabies is <\/span><b>typically 2\u20133 months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but may vary from one week to one year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initial symptoms include generic <\/span><b>signs like fever, pain, and unusual or unexplained tingling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pricking, or burning sensations at the wound site.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the virus moves to the central nervous system, progressive and fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord develops.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the virus infects the central nervous system and clinical symptoms appear, <\/span><b>rabies is<\/b> <b>fatal in 100% of cases.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prevention: Vaccinating dogs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including puppies, is the most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies in people because it stops the transmission at its
