billion years old are interpreted as inhabiting\u00a0<strong>intertidal areas and freshwater ponds and lakes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Living stromatolites are found in only a few salty lagoons or bays on Earth.<\/li>\n<li>The stromatolites at Chambaghat lie within the Krol Group of sedimentary rocks, comprising limestone, shale, and sandstone, formed in a shallow marine environment of what was once the\u00a0<strong>Tethys Sea.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This region was\u00a0<strong>once part of Gondwana<\/strong>, the southern supercontinent that included India, South America, Africa, and others.<\/li>\n<li>The Indian plate\u2019s northward drift and collision with Eurasia lifted marine sediments, including stromatolites, thousands of meters skyward.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Significance of Stromatolites<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>These ancient structures offer a window into a time when Earth\u2019s atmosphere was dominated by greenhouse gases, and
