


{"id":23955,"date":"2025-05-31T15:00:28","date_gmt":"2025-05-31T09:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=23955"},"modified":"2025-05-31T17:05:02","modified_gmt":"2025-05-31T11:35:02","slug":"ahilya-bai-holkar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ahilya-bai-holkar\/","title":{"rendered":"Ahilyabai Holkar"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Ahilyabai Holkar Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The Prime Minister will take part in a \u2018Mahila Sashaktikaran Maha Sammelan\u2019 event in Bhopal on the occasion of the 300th birth anniversary of legendary queen Ahilyabai Holkar.<\/p>\n<h2>About Ahilyabai Holkar<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar (31 May 1725 \u2013 13 August 1795) was a\u00a0<strong>ruler of the Malwa territory,<\/strong>\u00a0a part of the<strong>\u00a0Maratha Confederacy<\/strong>, from\u00a0<strong>1767 to 1795.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She served first as regent and then as ruler of the Holkar dynasty with its seats at Maheshwar and Indore in central India, in a period\u00a0<strong>considered the zenith of the Holkar dynasty.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Under her rule Malwa enjoyed relative peace, prosperity, and stability,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>her capital, Maheshwar,<\/strong>\u00a0was turned into an\u00a0<strong>oasis of literary, musical, artistic,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>industrial pursuits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She passed away on August 13, 1795, at the age of seventy.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Upon her death, Ahilyabai was\u00a0<strong>succeeded by Tukoji Rao Holkar,<\/strong>\u00a0who\u00a0<strong>abdicated in his son Jaswant Rao\u2019s favor two years later.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jaswant Rao<\/strong>\u00a0was the l<strong>ast Holkar ruler to remain independent<\/strong>\u00a0until his 1804 defeat by and subsequent peace with the British.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Titles<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>She is known as\u00a0<strong>Punyashlok\u00a0<\/strong>(\u201cOne as Pure as the Sacred Chants\u201d).<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Keay,\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>British historian<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>gave\u00a0<\/strong>the queen the\u00a0<strong>title of \u2018The Philosopher Queen\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ahilyabai Holkar Military Contribution<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>She was\u00a0<strong>military-trained under her father-in-law, Malhar Rao Holkar,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>personally led armies into battle.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ahilyabai\u00a0<strong>appointed\u00a0<\/strong>Malhar Rao\u2019s adopted son,\u00a0<strong>Tukoji Rao Holkar, the commander\u00a0<\/strong>of the Holkar army.<\/li>\n<li>She<strong>\u00a0engaged\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>Frenchman Chevelier Dudrenec in 1792 to help modernize her army\u00a0<\/strong>by raising four battalions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ahilyabai Holkar Administration<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>She earned a reputation for\u00a0<strong>administering justice fairly<\/strong>\u00a0during her rule, w<strong>ithout partiality\u00a0<\/strong>or partisanship. Ex: She\u00a0<strong>sentenced her only son,<\/strong>\u00a0found guilty of a capital offense,<strong>\u00a0to death<\/strong>\u00a0by being crushed by an elephant.<\/li>\n<li>She<strong>\u00a0established courts<\/strong>\u00a0for justice<strong>\u00a0and arbitration<\/strong>\u00a0in citizens\u2019 disputes.<\/li>\n<li>She also made some\u00a0<strong>landmark decisions\u00a0<\/strong>during her reign, including the\u00a0<strong>removal of traditional law confiscating the property of childless widows.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She was known for being\u00a0<strong>accessible to all her subjects<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>held daily audiences\u00a0<\/strong>where people could approach her.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Breaking another norm of the time, Ahilyabai\u00a0<strong>did not observe<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>custom of purdah\u00a0<\/strong>(seclusion of women).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ahilyabai Holkar Cultural Contribution<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>She welcomed stalwarts such as\u00a0<strong>Marathi poet Moropant, Shahir Ananta Gandhi,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Sanskrit scholar Khushali Ram<\/strong>\u00a0into her capital.<\/li>\n<li>She made\u00a0<strong>Maheshwar\u00a0<\/strong>(literally, \u201cabode of Lord Shiva\u201d)\u00a0<strong>her capital<\/strong>\u00a0and offered employment to several craftsmen, artists, and sculptors.<\/li>\n<li>She was a great pioneer and\u00a0<strong>builder of Hindu temples.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She\u00a0<strong>built hundreds of temples and Dharmashalas\u00a0<\/strong>throughout India.<\/li>\n<li>Her most\u00a0<strong>notable contribution<\/strong>\u00a0was the renovation and\u00a0<strong>repair of the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple in
