{"id":24010,"date":"2024-06-06T11:17:18","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T05:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24010"},"modified":"2025-04-07T06:28:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T00:58:49","slug":"musankwa-sanyatiensis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/musankwa-sanyatiensis\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Musankwa sanyatiensis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Musankwa sanyatiensis:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>new dinosaur species<\/strong> which has been <strong>identified from fossils<\/strong> discovered along the shores of <strong>Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The dinosaur\u2019s genus name, <strong>\u201cMusankwa,\u201d<\/strong> was the name of the houseboat scientists used during their expeditions to the research site.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, its species name, \u201csanyatiensis,\u201d alludes to the <strong>Sanyati River<\/strong> that <strong>flows into Lake Kariba.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>first dinosaur<\/strong> to be <strong>named from the Mid-Zambezi Basin <\/strong>of northern<strong> Zimbabwein over 50 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Additionally, it is <strong>only the fourth dinosaur<\/strong> to be <strong>named from Zimbabw<\/strong>e, following the descriptions of &#8220;Syntarsus&#8221; rhodesiensis in 1969, Vulcanodon karibaensis in 1972, and, most recently, Mbiresaurus raathi in 2022.<\/li>\n<li>The rocks yielding this new specimen date back to the<strong> Late Triassic period<\/strong>, approximately <strong>210 million years ago.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Musankwa sanyatiensis is represented by the remains of a single hind leg, including its thigh, shin, and ankle bones.<\/li>\n<li>Evolutionary analysis reveals that it was a <strong>member of the Sauropodomorpha<\/strong>, a group of <strong>bipedal, long-necked dinosaurs<\/strong> that were <strong>widespread during the Late Triassic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Interestingly, it appears to be closely related to contemporaries in South Africa and Argentina.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Weighing in at around <strong>390 kg, the plant-eating<\/strong> Musankwa sanyatiensis was one of the <strong>larger dinosaurs<\/strong> of its era and <strong>mostly lived in swamp areas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the Triassic period?<\/h3>\n<p>The Triassic Period was the first of the three geologic periods of the Mesozoic Era. The Triassic began approximately 252 million years ago at the end of the Permian Period and ended about 201 million years ago at the start of the Jurassic Period. The Triassic Period followed on the heels of the Permian extinction, the largest mass extinction in the history of Earth. The name Triassic derives from the Trias, a sequence of three rock strata, or layers, in Germany that lay above Permian rocks and below Jurassic rocks.
