{"id":24062,"date":"2025-12-17T11:56:52","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T06:26:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24062"},"modified":"2025-12-17T15:19:49","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:49:49","slug":"arun-iii-hydro-power-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arun-iii-hydro-power-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Arun-3 Hydropower Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Arun-3 Hydropower Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN recently visited the 900 MW Arun-3 hydroelectric project (HEP) in Nepal to review the status of construction and assess progress across key components of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Arun-3 Hydropower Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>900 MW run-of-the-river<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydropower project located on the<\/span><b> Arun River <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the Sankhuwasabha District of <\/span><b>Eastern Nepal.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Arun <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a t<\/span><b>ributary of the Koshi River in Nepal.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It envisages about 70 m high <\/span><b>concrete gravity dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Head Race Tunnel (HRT) of 11.74 km with an underground Power House containing four generating units of 225 MW each on the Left Bank.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estimated to cost more than $1.6 bn, the hydropower plant will produce 4,018.87 million units of electricity a year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once completed, it will be the <\/span><b>biggest hydroelectric facility in Nepal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>SJVN Arun-III Power Development Company (SAPDC),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>wholly-owned subsidiary of India\u2019s Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>developing <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the project on a <\/span><b>build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>SJVN <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a <\/span><b>joint venture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the <\/span><b>Government of India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the G<\/span><b>overnment of Himachal Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>SAPDC will operate the facility <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a period of <\/span><b>25 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, excluding the construction period of five years, <\/span><b>before transferring ownership to the Nepal government.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nepal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will <\/span><b>receive 21.9% of the electricity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generated at the power plant <\/span><b>as free power during these initial 25 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of commercial operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will <\/span><b>provide surplus power to India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strengthening economic linkages with Nepal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The power from the project shall be exported from Dhalkebar in Nepal to Muzaffarpur in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterpowermagazine.com\/news\/cmd-sjvn-reviews-progress-of-arun-3-project-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WPM<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arun-3 Hydropower Project is a 900 MW run-of-the-river hydropower project located on the Arun River in the Sankhuwasabha District of Eastern Nepal.
