


{"id":24189,"date":"2024-06-13T10:31:27","date_gmt":"2024-06-13T05:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24189"},"modified":"2025-04-07T07:44:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T02:14:51","slug":"cold-lava","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cold-lava\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Cold Lava?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Cold Lava:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Called \u201clahar\u201d<\/strong> in Indonesian, cold lava is a phenomenon that occurs <strong>when rain mixes with volcanic materials<\/strong> like ash, sand, and pebbles.<\/li>\n<li>The mixture forms a <strong>concrete-like substance<\/strong> that destroys everything in its path.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rain can carry cold lava down the slopes<\/strong> of a volcano during an eruption and into the paths of nearby towns or villages.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unlike traditional lava flows<\/strong>, <strong>which move slowly<\/strong> and give residents time to evacuate, <strong>cold lava can advance rapidly<\/strong>, at a speed of hundreds of kilometres per hour, and spread as far away as 60 km from the volcano.<\/li>\n<li>One of the defining characteristics of cold lava is its ability to <strong>pick up additional debris and sediment as it travels<\/strong> downhill.\n<ul>\n<li>This mixture can <strong>rapidly increase in volume and destructive potential<\/strong>, transforming from a relatively innocuous flow into a powerful force.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is considered <strong>more destructive and deadlier compared to regular lava flows<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Its <strong>high density and abrasive nature<\/strong> mean that it can cause significant damage to buildings, bridges, and roads, posing a serious threat to human life and property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cold lava <strong>remains hot internally<\/strong> due to chemical reactions within the volcanic material, but <strong>its external appearance and behaviour<\/strong> are <strong>more akin to wet concrete.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>While it is <strong>commonly associated with volcanic eruptions<\/strong>, lahars can <strong>also occur when no eruption takes place.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sometimes, heavy rainfall or snowfall can easily erode and transport fine-grained, loose volcanic sediment and form a slurry, especially if vegetation has not had time to grow back on recent volcanic deposits.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Lava?<\/h3>\n<p>Lava is hot, liquefied rock that flows from a volcano or other opening in the surface of Earth.
