


{"id":24407,"date":"2024-06-23T10:23:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-23T04:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24407"},"modified":"2025-04-07T09:19:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T03:49:29","slug":"what-is-space-variable-objects-monitor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-space-variable-objects-monitor\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>French-Chinese satellite<\/strong> which aims to <strong>detect and study gamma-ray bursts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was launched by a Long March-2C rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China&#8217;s Sichuan Province.<\/li>\n<li>It is a 930-kilogram satellite carrying <strong>four instruments &#8211; two French and two Chinese<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The satellite has been sent into an orbit over 600 kilometers above Earth and has a <strong>designed life of five years<\/strong>, though scientists expect it could be operational for as long as 20 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>GRBs generally <strong>occur after <\/strong>the <strong>explosion of huge stars<\/strong> &#8211; those more than 20 times as big as the sun &#8211; or <strong>the fusion of compact stars<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>extremely bright cosmic beams<\/strong> can give off a<strong> blast of energy equivalent to<\/strong> over a <strong>billion billion suns.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Observing them is like &#8220;looking back in time<\/strong>, as the light from these objects takes a long time to reach earth.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>rays carry traces of the gas clouds and galaxies<\/strong> they pass through on their journey through space &#8211; valuable data for better <strong>understanding the history and evolution of the universe.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>GRBs are notoriously <strong>hard to catch<\/strong> as they can <strong>appear anywhere<\/strong> in the sky and <strong>last for just a few seconds<\/strong>. They are readily<strong> absorbed by the Earth\u2019s atmosphere<\/strong>, so the only way to record them is to place probes in space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>SVOM<\/strong> has the potential to unravel several mysteries in the field of GRBs, including <strong>detecting the most distant GRBs<\/strong> in the universe, which correspond to the <strong>earliest GRBs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The data gathered will help test the laws of physics under conditions that cannot be replicated on Earth and provide insights into the dynamics of the universe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are Gamma Rays?<\/h3>\n<p>Gamma rays have the smallest wavelengths and the most energy of any wave in the electromagnetic spectrum.
