sq.km. and drains mainly northern France.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Course<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It rises 446 meters above sea level in the wine-making region of Burgundy, near the town of Dijon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>As the Seine approaches Paris,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is<\/span><b> joined by the Marne,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of its largest tributaries, on the right bank.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>flows through Paris<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for about 13 kilometers from west to Montereau-Fault-Yonne, it\u2019s known as the <\/span><b>Small Seine <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Petite Seine).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>From there to Paris,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s the <\/span><b>Upper Seine <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Haute Seine).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Passing through Paris<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s the<\/span><b> Paris waterway <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Travers\u00e9e de Paris).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Paris to Rouen, it\u2019s called the <\/span><b>Lower Seine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Basse Seine).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>As it finally makes its way to the English Channel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and its estuary at Honfleur and Le Havre, it\u2019s known as the <\/span><b>Maritime Seine <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Seine-Maritime).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the river basin is formed of <\/span><b>permeable rocks, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the absorptive capacity of which mitigates the risk of river floods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basin receives modest annual precipitation ranging from 650 to 750 millimeters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About 62% of the basin is used for agriculture;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the basin hosts 25% of the French agricultural activity and 25-30% of the national industrial activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of Europe\u2019s great historic rivers, and <\/span><b>its drainage network
