{"id":24499,"date":"2025-11-19T12:00:45","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T06:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24499"},"modified":"2025-11-19T14:41:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T09:11:23","slug":"african-swine-fever-asf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/african-swine-fever-asf\/","title":{"rendered":"African Swine Fever"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>African Swine Fever Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assam Government recently banned the inter-District movement of live pigs in the State to arrest the spread of African swine fever, a highly contagious and lethal disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About African Swine Fever\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>highly contagious and hemorrhagic viral disease affecting pigs and wild boar.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease does not infect humans (not zoonotic) <\/span><b>or other livestock species.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASF causes a destructive effect on piggery due to <\/span><b>high morbidity and mortality (up to 90-100%).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Originally found<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout <\/span><b>sub-Saharan Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ASF is <\/span><b>now prevalent in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many countries in <\/span><b>Europe, Asia, and Africa.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India notified the first outbreak <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of ASF virus in January, <\/span><b>2020 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the Northeastern States of <\/span><b>Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transmission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus is <\/span><b>highly resistant in the environment,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning that it can survive on clothes, boots, wheels, and other materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also <\/span><b>survive in various pork products,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as ham, sausages, or bacon.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, <\/span><b>human behaviour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s can <\/span><b>play an important role in spreadin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">g this disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection can occur through <\/span><b>direct contact between pigs or boars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also, for example,<\/span><b> through soft ticks in (sub)tropical regions,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through<\/span><b> contaminated materials or contaminated feed.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The clinical symptoms can look very much<\/span><b> like those of classical swine fever: fever, weak pigs, lack of appetite, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflamed eye mucous membranes,<\/span><b> red skin,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bloody) diarrhea, and vomiting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Prevention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Currently, there is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no treatment or vaccine available <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against ASF, so <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">prevention by adopting strict biosecurity measures,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">culling <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the animals, is the only way to prevent ASF.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/assam\/assam-bans-movement-of-pigs-to-check-spread-of-african-swine-fever\/article70290133.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>African Swine Fever is a highly contagious and hemorrhagic viral disease affecting pigs and wild boar.
