{"id":24724,"date":"2025-10-27T04:11:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T22:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24724"},"modified":"2025-10-29T10:51:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T05:21:24","slug":"world-drug-report-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/world-drug-report-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"World Drug Report 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About World Drug Report 2024:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an annual report released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-office-on-drugs-and-crime-unodc\/\" target=\"_blank\">UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Highlights of the Report:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The number of <strong>people who use drugs<\/strong> has risen to <strong>292 million in 2022<\/strong>, a <strong>20 percent increase over the past ten years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cannabis<\/strong> remains the <strong>most widely used<\/strong> drug worldwide (228 million users), <strong>followed by opioids<\/strong> (60 million users), <strong>amphetamines<\/strong> (30 million users), cocaine (23 million users), and ecstasy (20 million users).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nitazenes<\/strong>, a group of highly potent <strong>synthetic opioids<\/strong>, <strong>haverecently emerged<\/strong> in several high-income countries, resulting in an increase in <strong>overdose deaths.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Though an estimated <strong>64 million people<\/strong> worldwide <strong>suffer from drug use disorders<\/strong>, only <strong>one in 11 is in treatment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Women receive less access to treatment than men,<\/strong> with only one in 18 women with drug use disorders in treatment versus one in seven men.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 2022,<\/strong> an estimated <strong>7 million people<\/strong> were in <strong>formal contact with the police<\/strong> (arrests, cautions, and warnings) <strong>for drug offences<\/strong>, with about two-thirds of this total due to drug use or possession for use.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, 2<strong>.7 million people were prosecuted for drug offences<\/strong> and over 1.6 million were convicted globally in 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Facts about UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a global leader in the fight <strong>against illicit drugs and international crime<\/strong>, in addition to being responsible for <strong>implementing the United Nations lead programme on terrorism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was established in 1997 through a merger between the United Nations Drug Control Programme and the Centre for International Crime Prevention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters: Vienna, Austria<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>UNODC works to <strong>educate people<\/strong> throughout the world <strong>about the dangers of drug abuse<\/strong> and to <strong>strengthen international action<\/strong> against illicit drug production and trafficking and drug-related crime.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>UNODC also works to improve<strong> crime prevention and assist with criminal justice reform<\/strong> in order to strengthen the rule of law, promote stable and viable criminal justice systems, and <strong>combat the growing threats of transnational organized crime<\/strong> and corruption.<\/li>\n<li>In 2002, the UN General Assembly approved an <strong>expanded programme<\/strong> of activities <strong>for the Terrorism Prevention Branch of UNODC.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The activities focus on <strong>providing assistance to States, <\/strong>on request, in ratifying and <strong>implementing the eighteen universal legal instruments against terrorism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00b7 <strong>Funding<\/strong>: It relies on <strong>voluntary contributions, mainly from governments<\/strong>, to carry out the majority of our work.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are opioids?<\/h3>\n<p>Opioids are a class of drugs that derive from, or mimic, natural substances found in the opium poppy plant. Opioids work in the brain to produce a variety of effects, including pain relief. Opioid drugs include prescription pain medicine and illegal drugs. Some people use opioids because of the euphoria (\u201chigh\u201d) they can produce.
